Colleen West, KIRO 7 NewsSEATTLE — A body found in the waters below the Ship Canal Bridge in Seattle is presumed to be that of a man who fell off the bridge after a rollover crash, according to Seattle police.
The two-car rollover crash just south of Northeast 45th Street in Seattle’s University District happened at about 4:40 a.m. Tuesday. It blocked all lanes of southbound Interstate 5 for more than 3 hours.“Based on witness reports, we soon found out that had possibly fallen off the bridge and down into the water below the Ship Canal Bridge,” Seattle Fire Department spokesperson Kristen Tinsley said.
Rescue swimmers and a diver searched around docks and under the bridge for the missing driver for an hour. Afterward, Seattle Fire said the search had become a recovery mission because of the amount of time the man had spent in the water. It is not yet known what caused the victim to plummet off the bridge.
Another driver at the scene, a 22-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of DUI, WSP Trooper Rick Johnson said. Video from a Washington State Department of Transportation camera showed two cars rolled over onto their roofs. At one point, traffic was at a standstill and backed up for miles.Expand
