In a school of 330 students from 26 different nationalities, a formerly unused room is providing a safe and private space for quiet reflection and prayer.

Amid the cacophony and chaos of a primary school playground at lunchtime, students Filza Afandi and Kaisara Zafirah unlock a doorway to a place of quiet reflection. The room, on the ground floor of one of the school's Queenslander-style buildings, was refitted to include a basin and foot bath before it was officially opened in 2020 by representatives of Buddhist, Christian and Islamic faiths.

Before its installation, students and staff practising noon prayer had to attempt to find a quiet place. "It's really wonderful, really touching that we have such a diverse community, but also such an inclusive school community." Laode Fasihun, a parent at the school and a senior member of Cairns's Indonesian Muslim community, said the faith room made life easier for some students."But that's a bit hard and it takes time when we're inside the school."

"When you're in balance with your own faith and your beliefs and you know that the school you go to values that, I certainly would like to think it has a positive influence.
