“I think what they did last night was absolutely wrong. I think it was very racist,” Rawls said Wednesday. “I’m going to say what I feel. I feel bad for some of them feeling that way in 2022. They haven’t woken up.” Another issue is the use of feathers, not just in the mascot but by students or anyone else dressing up as the mascot. Gantt explained during a Wednesday afternoon phone call that in the Native community the feathers and arrows indicate a member of the tribe was a warrior and that not everyone had that designation. He said it carried the same weight as stolen valor, or someone dressing up as if they were in the military but weren’t.
“The answer to that question was overwhelmingly and unambiguously no,” Gantt said. “They do not feel honored and do not feel respected.” He added that because there had been such a thorough discussion and general agreement from the community that the mascot was offensive, the whole process now has been tainted.
But, she predicts there will need to be a change in the composition of the board for change to happen.
Kudos for not backing the agenda of a few to change something that nobody else ever had a problem with.
