ICYMI: School staff unions seek clarity on sick leave

Signs on how to safely put on your mask are posted in a 1st grade classroom at Sylvia Fedoruk school. Photo taken in Saskatoon, SK on Thursday, September 3, 2020.Unions representing school staff say the province’s shift toward a personal responsibility model for mitigating COVID-19 has left staff in a difficult position.

Exacerbating that is the fact that many casual workers don’t have sick leave, he said, meaning it falls to individuals to decide whether they want to work or not see a pay check. “They’re concerned. Why should I have to use sick leave if I’m not sick? I’ve just been exposed to a highly contagious virus,” he said. So that’s kind of the issue. And we’ve asked government on numerous occasions to get some clarification and have failed to receive any clarification on that issue.”

Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools staff who test positive will need to use their sick days in order to do so, spokesperson Derrick Kunz said.

Colorado Springs school district cancels high school classes after 30% of teachers participate in 'sick out'On Thursday night, Academy School District 20 in Colorado Springs announced it was canceling Friday's high school classes after nearly 30 percent of teachers 'called out sick' in protest. ASD20 says its elementary and middle schools will go forward as normally scheduled. Maybe that’s because these boards are politically affiliated/funded. AcademyD20 does not value educators because they believe the lies of the Church to Caucus. 🤷🏼‍♀️ Wow. What a great example teachers are setting for students. They don’t like something so they hold the children hostage by refusing to work. Should be penalties for this. Teachers stay home, get paid, kids lose out on education. There are better adult ways to handle this.
