Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says citizens, not just governments, have a role to play in ensuring that fundamental rights are defended after a Muslim teacher in Quebec was removed from her teaching position for wearing a hijab in class.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau speaks with the CBC's Rosemary Barton during an expansive year-end interview.

. "I have also stated that I am not taking off the table intervening, at a future date, in a legal challenge." Trudeau went to to say "that's what we're seeing in Chelsea, where the community, where the families, where the kids, where everyone is saying, 'Hey this is wrong, that a young Muslim teacher loses her job just because she's Muslim.'"After working several months as a substitute teacher with the Western Quebec School Board, Fatemeh Anvari said she was asked to apply for a more permanent position teaching a Grade 3 class at Chelsea Elementary School.

Trudeau has defended his government's decision not to intervene in the case, saying that Quebeckers are already challenging the province in court and that he will first let that process play out before making any legal moves of his own.Early last week, Quebec Premier François Legault said he didn't understand how Trudeau could intervene in a challenge to a bill that is supported by a majority in the province.

Quebec Premier François Legault campaigned on the idea of Bill 21 before his government formally introduced it in 2019. Trudeau said he has not taken the idea of intervening through a legal challenge off the table, but stressed fellow citizens must also play a role.

HE LIES AGAIN

Whereas Canada is founded upon principles that recognize the supremacy of God and oversteps the Civil Rights of Canadians, if you abstain the worship of the supernatural and its promotion, you are eligible to become victim to the supremacy of the supernatural.

This version of tale of two cities is the rule of Fundementalist Religion over fundemental civil rights. Did Canadian soldiers die for a Canadian Theocracy or Canadian Democracy?

Let it go. Unless we create a federal right to wear whatever clothes you want on the job this will go nowhere.

Quebec are the only one who have the courage to protect Canada’s culture. This is not the Islamic state of Canada

Trudeau doesn’t have the balls to fight Quebec on this.

'A politician needs to have the ability to say what will happen tomorrow, next week, next month and next year and then have the ability to say why it never happened' - Winston Churchill That's right Canada, at the end of the day, he's a politician. A son of a millionaire...

Same time frame decision as ?Huawei

The fact that ppl defend his stupidity is shocking

Why is quebec so rascist?

One unicorn short of a fantasy.

I haven't ruled out voting for the NDP or CPC in the next election (and I'm a lifelong liberal voter) How about he do something or get off the pot.

Say what?

Well what exactly is he waiting for

how much did the insider consultant get paid to tell him to loosen the tie and roll up the sleeves. all appearances, little substance

Bill 21 is legal action against religious oppressions. Next action should be ban_religions.

Freeing Muslim women from the hijab is the single greatest thing Quebec has done ✅

JustinTrudeau enought nonsense. Grow a back bone and challenge this discriminatary law.

He’s bobbing and weaving over Quebec’s secularism law isn’t he?

Still reviewing polling numbers.

*Doing the right thing pending polling favorable to such a move in Liberal/Liberal-leaning ridings.

Great law. Leave it be!

Enough talk. Challenge it now.

Because he will never do anything to upset Quebec! Justin Trudeau: 'Quebecers are better than the rest of Canada'

Yet his response to a bill 21 question in the leaders' debate was to demand an apology from those who asked the question. I think we can safely say there will be no legal challenge.

Yeah, he's probably just waiting until some polling tells him he can. What a joke. He should be front & centre on this. Team up with the Tories. It's legalized discrimination. This shouldn't be a partisan issue. Show some leadership, JustinTrudeau

He hasn't ruled on anything in 6 years... That is the problem..

I agree. Sometimes the message has to rise from the people. This issue is a dangerous issue for any federal party because it could ignite another vote for separation and cost votes.

He already said it needs to be dealt with in Quebec, he doesn't have the cojones to get involved TrudeauNationalDisgrace

well, he will lose

A whole lot more than O'Toole.

Watch on YouTube, the comments are worth it!

Evergreen tweet

That's all talk he doesn't have the guts to challenge Quebec because he knows his leadership is over if he does.

Legault owns Trudeau. He will do nothing.

Take your time 🙄

CBCAlerts Of course, his reply is divisive again! Turning citizens against each other.

Let it Go ! None of the Fed’s Business. Immigration recipients don’t like Quebec climate move on. 🇨🇦

CBCAlerts With the notwithstanding clause... citizens legally has no say in it. Rework the clause so it can only be used for saving lives and not divide communities.

What exactly is he suggesting?

CBCAlerts I wonder who programmed him to say this?

Then who should be leading the charge if not the government? Is this guy allergic to doing anything at all? If Trudeau doesn’t want the job then he should resign.

Coward.

If you are serious about opposing Bill21 then you should support the Quebec lawyers and organizations who are already in the fight. Given the invocation of the NWC, the most realistic outcome is that the QC English school boards are exempt from the law (see QC Sup. Ct. ruling).

Whoulda thought govts had anything to do with laws and stuff..

Truly pathetic

CBCAlerts Quebec residents can fight the Quebec secularism law. As a resident of British Columbia I have no dog in that fight. There are government attempts at social engineering (at the Federal and Provincial levels) that hit much closer to home.

Yes but governments carry clout and are supposedly representing the people. He should lead by example but is too afraid to upset Quebec

CBCAlerts I know Justin would love nothing more than for Canada to adopt Sharia law, but we, Quebeckers, think that dangerous dogmas have no place in a civilized society, and especially not in government.

CBCAlerts The REAL Question: Is Quebec's Bill21 Constitutional? Didn't his father Repatriate it & didn't he amend it to expand those very Rights usurped by francoislegault who stands colluded w/ Trudeau in a NeoLiberalFASCIST'crusade'? CORRUPTION is Rampant in cdnpoli!

Sometimes the people have to rise up (armed with their chalk & intelligence & energy) to combat Conservative governments. jkenney and AdrianaLaGrange can explain.

Sounds like he is inciting violence! Does the same apply to lockdowns, mandates, and ClimateTax ? But seriously, is JustinTrudeau implying that HIS govt has done anything resembling fighting 'secularism law'?

Recipe for disaster: A province that believes they’re “distinct” and the constitution does not apply them, an absolutely impotent prime minister, and old fashioned racism. Trudeau is well within his powers to challenge Bill21 but he won’t, all for political gain. Worst PM ever.

Trudeau has a serious love affair with Jewish lawyers

CBCAlerts One-on-one Quebecers are kind, caring, tolerant. It's the government who comes out with laws to restrict, persecute specific ethnic groups. Used to have signs saying 'No Jews' etc. Then not allowing English. Now this. And society goes along with the gov they elected.

This matter goes deeper then you are stating. You are virtuous signalling. The government of Quebec took a bold step in their decision, mind your own business.

says the guy who is keeping his mouth shut so as to avoid losing pq votes

What? Usually he somehow blames Conservatives for all his failures to act. Quebec's Bill 21 is a shocking display of Quebec racism & yet Trudeau-bots stay silent.

Funny, because when he *wants* to insert himself into a culture war fight, nothing on Heaven or Earth can stop him.

Trudeau is absolutely right, even if he gets there out of political self interest. Contrary to a common belief in parts of English Canada, the federal gov’t is not the supervisor of the provinces. Federal politicians should oppose Bill 21; they are not uniquely able to fight it.

CBCAlerts If not our elected officials in offices of authority & adequate funding to pursue legal challenges to the Supreme Court of Canada &/or laws, then who? Sadly politicians are more worried for doing the right thing than losing the votes of the bigots!!!

CBCAlerts

CBCAlerts Spinless mother f

CBCAlerts Yes best for him to stay out of Quebec's unconstitional issue in fear of losing Quebec seats....got it!

CBCAlerts Why is quebec so rascist?

CBCAlerts Gutless spineless response to a racist law designed to drive religious minorities out of the Province.

He will never risk his shaky Quebec seats by standing up for Canada against Que. Nationalists, Separatists and Legault. They all scare him shitless.

Sure, but govt can do a hell of a lot.

Says the guy who thinks that bigger and more government is the answer to everything else….

Oh great, Bill21 is *our* fault, too

Agreed. We should all be fighting this. Boycotting quebec. Pushing our politicians to revoke section 33.

This is the very definition of political cowardice.

Oh ffs. What a useless, spineless response.

Honestly...

It is HIS job to do that. He just doesn't want to do it as his support in QC would plummet. Goodbye re-election. Long on talk and short on walk.

Lawyers are overpaid art students prone to overformalistic thinking with a monopoly on law that they have ruthlessly exploited for profit to the detriment of justice. Judges come from this broken cohort. There is no rule of law; we are ruled by laws for the majority.

Yet again Justin offloading responsibility

It IS in fact the job of the federal government to defend the Charter. It's true that anyone may fight it. It's not true that they should fight it alone as the feds abdicate responsibility
