Students from disadvantaged backgrounds outperform more advantaged students with the same academic ability in their first year of university, a study has found.

Kim Paino, the general manager of marketing and engagement at UAC, said disadvantaged students did slightly better at university if they managed to get there. However, as ATARs declined, students from lower socio-economic quartiles were less likely to fail than those from higher ones. “This effect peaks for students with ATARs in the 60s and 70s and reduces at ATARs below 60,” the study found.

The UAC study also found that equity scholarships offered by universities did help students with ATARs between 60 and 90 achieve greater academic success. Craig Petersen, the president of the Secondary Principals Council, said advantaged students – with educated parents who have a higher disposable income – may be more complacent. “What a lot of students learn is how to do well enough without having to extend themselves,” he said.

JordsBaker Of course...as only the pick of the litter from disadvantaged backgrounds go to uni...whereas there are some passengers going to uni from the more privileged groups.

bencubby JordsBaker Yet, if universities apply considerations beyond a black-and-white ATAR score, to determine a student’s aptitude, the has conniptions.

JordsBaker Well cut off me legs and call me shorty❗️What a scoop❗️

JordsBaker No surprises there. Migrants, kids of single parents and working class kids who get into uni don’t have the luxury of failing.
