A further 182 unmarked graves have been discovered at a third Indigenous residential school in Canada. It follows the discovery of the remains of 215 children at a school in British Columbia in May and 751 more unmarked graves in Saskatchewan last week.

The Lower Kootenay Band said a search of the Cranbrook site, where the Catholic Church operated a school on behalf of the federal government from 1912 until the early 1970s, was started last year.Flags and lights mark the 751 unmarked graves found near the grounds of the former Marieval Indian Residential School in Saskatchewan, Canada. They are believed to be the remains of members of bands of the Ktunaxa nation, which includes the Lower Kootenay, and other neighboring Indigenous communities.

Until the 1990s, some 150,000 Indian, Inuit and Metis youngsters were forcibly enrolled in 139 of these residential schools, where students were physically and sexually abused by headmasters and teachers who stripped them of their culture and language. More than 4,000 died of disease and neglect in the schools, according to a commission of inquiry that concluded Canada had committed"cultural genocide."

Last Friday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau apologised for the"harmful government policy" of Indigenous assimilation.

Catholic church back at it. Dont worry justin Trudeau will lower the flags half mass. Wont get anymore from the government though

I am about 95% those children was a result of child-molesation or some other form of violence (saxual) - spelling is intentional

So terrible.. the Catholic Church needs to answer for these crimes too, their priests and nuns were running the schools If there’s one thing we all MUST learn from history, it’s that people of all religions will do horrifying things (like this) in the name of their God....

When these schools closed (if they did) were there remaining children who went back to their tribes?

I’m not sure why this is news. Not of these graves are new. All the deaths have been previously tallied and accounted for in the TRC final report. The media is just opportunistically reporting on it now, in the lead up to Canada Day in what is likely and election year.

Infant mortality was rife in those days.

the enormity of the loss of children's lives is impossible to comprehend or process to me. I cannot imagine the pain for the Indigenous people in Canada, I can only send my kindest and warmest regards. I hope that all in Canada will rally to support them and listen at this time

If anyone thought those poor kids were abused and killed by some Islamic group, they would have been deported by now, best case scenario. But the Catholic Church is more than welcome, because Canada is too welcoming, specially if the Holy Spirit is involved.

This will be the case at EVERY religious institution in the WORLD. Prime Minister Scott Morrison must order an investigation to uncover similar mass graves at Australian sites. Refusing to sell church real estate to pay compensation to survivors is no longer acceptable

Somebody needs to be held accountable...and there needs to be some kind of repatriation...this is atrocious

Can anyone please explain why they were mass murdering all these poor children? Or was it a horrible epidemic What happened?
