Marieval was run by the Roman Catholic Church until Cowessess First Nation took over its operations in 1981.The Cowessess First Nation, located 164 kilometres east of Regina, began radar scanning of the school grounds and surrounding area on June 1 in an effort to identify and memorialize victims of the institution.
Cowessess started planning its radar search two years ago, but its chief says it was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Delorme said in the meeting that the Roman Catholic Church used an adjacent cemetery to bury school victims. However, he says the First Nation had to expand their search four times after elders shared oral stories of the school, saying the burials spread past the cemetery.

I heard the chief the other day on the radio he said that they knew that the bodies were there and at one point they were marked. But the community fell out with the church so the church destroyed all the headstones. Am I remembering what he said right? Absolute disgrace.

This is expected as TRC already stated that up to 4100 children died while attending residential schools over 120 years. Most from epidemic diseases compounded by crowded living conditions, malnutrition & maltreatment. Most were buried on residential school grounds.
I hope the focus and goal will be to find the truth and facts so that Canada can move forward in a positive way. So many deaths is tragic and horrible but I’m feeling the tone from gov and media is that the worst in humanity happened which only divides us more. I want the truth.
