University of Cape Town spokesman Elijah Moholola has confirmed that all academic activities have been suspended but could not confirm the extent of the fire damage yet.

The fire had yet to be properly contained by last night. Anton Bredell, the MEC for local government, environmental affairs and development planning in the Western Cape, said the South African National Defence Force was activated yesterday. “The university has put emergency measures in place to respond to the fire on the Rondebosch campus on Sunday,” Moholola said.
