Two legislative measures proposing to grant passing grades to all students enrolled during the current school year have won favorable action of the House Committee on Basic Education and Culture.

In a committee hearing on Thursday, the House panel chaired by Pasig City Rep. Roman Romulo reached a consensus to draft a resolution carrying the proposal contained in two bills filed for the panel’s consideration.

Bukidnon Reps. Manuel Antonio Zubiri and Maria Lourdes Acosta-Alba had filed House Bill 7961 proposing the protection of the mental health of K-12 students during the COVID-19 pandemic. The authors said this move is calculated at addressing mental health concerns on minors and students who have been barred from going outside their homes as part of the COVID-19 safety precautions.

Nueva Ecija Rep. Micael Violago filed House Resolution No. 1383 encouraging all public and private educational institutions to adopt a “pass” or “drop” grading system to cover the current school year. She underscored the need to free students from stress, anxiety and depression that are usually triggered by their being isolated and denied freedom to go out of their homes.
