The centre-left failed to confront the increasingly toxic discourse around migration until it was too late, says the Guardian columnist Nesrine Malik

It can only be changed from one form to another.

Yes, a hard lesson that 'liberals' refuse to learn. As demonstrated by the tone of this article. The usual assault against Brexit voters, as unleashed daily by the Guardian, BBC, etc. 'Unchecked and unchallenged', if I may. You're part of the problem.

As three word phrases go ‘Ever Closer Union’ nailed it for the leave side.

Maybe, just maybe, they left because of bullshit like this;

Unsurprisngly, NesrineMalik is blissfully ignorant of the Factortame debacle, blissfully unaware that austerity was the product of an obligation to the EU

Still calling brexiteers xenophobes Really ! When will the guardian get it . You can only understand brexit through the lens of racism. The war is lost we have left . Support our PM now not Brussels

Visit any country in the world, on any continent. Run a survey of the average person on the street and ask them if they'd like to see 100,000's of migrants arrive every year, if they'd like to see their culture and their communities changed etc The answer will always be no.

As usual blends economic migrants and refugees/asylum seekers into the same issue. Arguments along these lines would be much clearer if a proper distinction was made.

Liberalism always leads to fascism. The guardian attacked Labour more than the right wing press under JC. Liberals prefer fascists to socialists.

The news media is a huge problem you point out the problems you create and think you are clever, news should have nothing to do with making money.

One Leave and the Conservatives (and Labour to some extent) tapped into the same type of sentiments exploited by the Nazis in their rise to power, and from the same socio-economic strata of society too. It’s easy to exploit stupid people. Very.

Remember when Tony Blair was the people’s princess?

Trump and his worshippers are the most resentful people in the West, if not the world

Brexit like Trump was a vote for nihilism by those left behind by globalization. Rather than accept their supposed inferiority, they decided to deep six the entire shitshow. The new left continues to celebrate China & globalization & billionaires, and will carry on losing.

Politics of resentment? That’s a new one. Btw Tony never became EU President did he? Lol

Cipolla says that stupidity is an act that causes harm without making a profit, even losing. Of the possible solutions, both win, what one wins the other loses and both parties lose. What solution do you think stupidity will choose?

Their party is like a cork in the CHANNEL of politics

NesrineMalik Let's not forget our not insignificant role in the horror shows in Iraq and Afghanistan either. Ironic.

What a nonsense story from a point on view not even rooted in the reality of the situation, rather viewed from the interviewees and interviewers personal assumptions. Meaning it actually ends up informing on their own outlook rather than that of Brexit 🤷🏼‍♀️

NesrineMalik ' the work of political engineers who mined a generation of scattered grievances and forged them into a single demand' Aside from the idea, that's outstanding writing

......change the record ffs

So liberal they cannot see other any other points of view.

This article couldn't be further from the truth. Ironically, it's just another article to air a minority losing vote's resentment at losing. It doesn't accurately articulate why people voted leave. I would advise you to look at the EU's behaviour in the current negotiations.

LOL

If I ran a country interested in annexing another country via genocide and needed advice on how not to stir up the international community while creating a humanitarian disaster I'd hire Tony Blair as an advisor... Just sayin'
