The prime minister is expected to announce a “minimalist” cabinet reshuffle later this week, but it will not include any change in the defence portfolio, according to Andrew Clennell. Rumours circulated over the weekend around Defence Minister Linda Reynold’s position after she received criticism for her handling of the Brereton report. Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton was believed to be an option if Ms Reynolds was to be replaced, but said the change is highly unlikely.

The apparent resolution around the defence portfolio leaves trade as the only vacant ministerial spot as current Trade Minister Simon Birmingham will forgo the portfolio as he replaces former Finance Minister Mathias Cormann. “Trade’s the only issue; Simon Birmingham is taking finance, he’s letting trade go,” Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell said. Mr Clennell said either Minister for Employment Michaelia Cash or Education Minister Dan Tehan will fill the now-vacant trade portfolio.
