Australia's leading school principal says trust in democratic institutions has been eroded by Victoria's response to the pandemic.

Derek Scott, one of Australia’s leading educators, can’t help but be excited about what schools might look like on the other side of the pandemic.

“What we can deliver in the virtual space, the flexibility we will be able to offer students; education is going to change really significantly out of this and I think it is going to change for the better,’’ Mr Scott tells“This group of students will be at the forefront of a revolution in education which will leave them better prepared for the future than students have ever been before.’’

“If we want to build a strong, cohesive, multicultural society, we have got to have great respect for and integrity in the institutions of our democracy,’’ he says.“We are always encouraging our students to be good citizens and think about the parliamentary democratic process being integral to the freedoms that we have and yet, that is the first thing we have cast aside when we reach a crisis.

During Victoria’s first lockdown, Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton provided advice to schools on when to continue classroom teaching and when to move to online learning, but decisions on how to apply that advice were left to the schools. “Schools are pretty good at making judgments at what is best for their students and particularly at the moment, educators are really worried about the year 3 to 10 students.

TimWilsonMP Maybe if we weren’t churning out illiterates and innumerate They should look within

TimWilsonMP And he has done what research?

TimWilsonMP Please erosion in institutions started now? It’s been going on for a long time due to the woeful conduct of our so called leaders. Including our friend Tim shamelessly campaigning for vested interests including his own in a misleading manner

Won't read the article but the innate bias of the precis suggests that the Principal holds that position at an elite private school and the writer of the precis also went to a private school. True ?

That’s funny at the state school principals award 2020, his name was not on the list.

What a load of codswallop. The state government is doing exactly what they were elected for - to serve the best interests of the Victorian people. Anyone who thinks keeping us alive isn't in our best interests is an idiot.

OMG...... Haileybury principal says that children will be effected by the government’s approach to how the government has managed the lock down.....seriously? That is what he thinks kids worry about? Parliament having limited sittings? Chip seems to have found a fellow traveller.

JHC; it's Chip Le Grand; more equine ordure

He does not speak for everybody, just for himself and speaking for myself, I am not interested in your opinion pieces

Just a question ....what is the data that supports the title of “ Australia’s leading school principal”? Please give evidence or we might just think you have pulled this title out of a part of your body so as to give credibility to your political leaning!

And he’s not a ‘top educator’. Being a private school principal merely signals being ambitious and good at working the system

People’s trust in Australian values is severely chslkenged by bloated fat cat private schools putting their totters out for more while our public schools go without

Is he the Principal of a leading school or the leader of school Principals or .......? Anyway, Dan Andrews is actually considered as an example of a good leader whilst Fed Pollies are all showing themselves to be less than adequate!

Maybe the media could fuck off with getting the opinion from anyone wanting to put it forward regarding an unprecedented pandemic, where time couldn't be wasted and 100 different voices muddies the waters. 💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩

Who made this conclusion about this guy being the 'Leading' school principal.? What a load of rubbish!

He surely means the Federal response, which was just a lot of empty words and hot air.

“Leading school principal” Who said? Opinion of 1 exclusive private school principal relevant? Possible conflict of interests as in governance by corporate conservatives & need for cross campus domestic/international campus movement, Haileybury School scandals examined?

1. What makes him Australia's leading school principal? 2. Why are you speaking to him about this?

Can’t help but think ppl believe democracy is allow’g all ppl to be in the decision making process all the time, includ’g during a crisis like during a pandemic, natural disaster or war. Sure if you’ve the luxury of time & abundance of knowledge. Such an entitled & arrogant view.

Who wrote this byline? Seriously.

Stick to teaching kids and keep out of politics.....

TimWilsonMP Charging high fees for an education does not make one a 'leading educator'. Surprise surprise, he's a Liberal Party synchophant... ThisIsNotJournalism auspol springst

Halieybury College is your credible source of comment? No thank you.

Bullshit

Not paying a cent for school fees this year. They can go fck themselves.

Must be the head of one.of Sydney's Elite Overfunded Private Schools for the Self Entitled.

'Oh lets have a conversation,' When a Pandemic hits there is no time The decisiveness of the Andrews govt is what matters. I'm sure if he didn't have his cabinet behind him they would be out shouting.

Where are they pulling these numpties out of. With all the cuts to education from the feds they go after state ffs

Never heard of this chap. This is not journalism.

'Australia's leading school principal'? By what measure?

This is a ridiculous headline. The article seems to talk about all the *good* ways education has been advanced in the pandemic, *despite* the challenges! Not how it’s eroding trust in government 🤷‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️

He is acting as if this isn't a global pandemic with 1 million dead and then has the gaul to claim he is concerned with unequal education outcomes. Are schools the next item from the PM's office, following contact and trace and curfew? Israel opened schools and numbers exploded.

The principal of Hailebury is concerned with educational inequities. Maybe he should apply for a job leading a state school in a disadvantaged area and advocate for more inequitable school funding!

LOL as if I’m going to listen to someone who works at Haileybury or any money-making leech private school. Please. You represent a tiny, privileged portion of the population. Private schools should be illegal.

What a pity that for such so called “leading School” to have such a senseless principal

Hahahaha

I’m Australians leading bulls..t detector and I call bull.

He needs to get behind the thousands of people that have been saying that for months

Schools are a hateful place where bullying, inequity & favoritism R rife. It has ever been thus. On reflection I would have relished the ability 2 stay home & not trudge off on the bus to the nasty chaos of school. The good things in life I learned from my family not teachers.

TimWilsonMP He actually didn't say it as the headline insinuates. More discussions should take place prior to final decisions is more his point. Maybe in a relaxed situation. In a pandemic & emergency situation that is not realistic nor efficient particularly when time is of the essence.

Rubbish article

Leading principal because he got one award running a private school? The age is a joke

Just another LNP stooge.

Don’t care what the principal of a wealthy private school thinks in his bubble of entitlement. The ‘leading school principals’ are leading communities with complex needs without the absurdly high salary or media support. Public well-being eroded by media - that’s more fitting! 🤷🏾‍♂️

Am I imagining the fact that the majority of CV19 cases seem to be coming from independent schools? I would love to see the stats. Are the public schools doing something right?

Our media are going all out to bash Victoria and our premier. Most Victorians are behind Daniel . Is the principal concerned about Morrison shutting down debate in parliament and stopping people from leaving Australia as well? That's undemocratic

I literally checked to see if the age was actually news Corp but surprise, no such glitch in the matrix. Shame on the Age for giving into LNP bias games when we need science, facts and life before neo-liberal bull shit.

Well there’s a new angle.

Private school COVIDIOT.. and irrelevant

Just another Lieberal stooge

steven_kolber Bullshit.

It is too funny that all these rich white men speak out against the virus when they are in the population group less likely to survive the virus. Almost as if they had a death wish. Makes you wonder who is paying them to say this?

Trust in this masthead has been erased by its constant disparagement of the correct course of action to fix this situation.

Trust in the Media has been eroded by FAKE NEWS especially from the “OLD” AGE

We need more flexibility in our approach to education during a pandemic, not less. Schools should support students willing to remote option learn. Let kids live link classrooms at designated times & STOP marking students absent. Why isn’t distancing more important in schools?

He sounds like a whinger. Doesn’t seem to be able to trust the elected leadership. Trust begets trust. He needs to loosen up a bit, we have a good team in charge.

Private schools bleeding out.

Ok why weren't we told that the Age has been taken over by Murdoch? Is it just me or is this sort of drivel masquerading as news becoming standard fare for our once mighty newspaper? My subscription is looking less likely to continue by the day.

Private school principal ... disadvantaged by having too much public money. Bought and paid. Biased educational mercenary.

Trust in Australia's democratic institutions has been eroding for a decade or two (or three). I'd be concerned if our 'leading school principal' wasn't aware of this.

How can he be the top Australian principal when their students are selected on the wealth of their families? Head up a school where you have to teach who you are given with limited resources and improve their results, then I’ll consider this claim.

What makes him Australia's leading school principal? Apart from the fact he heads one of Victoria's most exclusive and expensive private schools so speaking out against Andrews' policy is well aligned with the right-wing parent's ideology.

And his school is so representative of Australia. Help not hinder. Fight the virus or shut up

He is wrong .... the State could not allow schools to say open when there was a risk to students, staff and their families.

What makes him the leading school principal? Who awarded that? The parents paying all that money must be giving him grief.

Well teachers voted for the Socialist nutter........what did they expect? Only yourselves to blame.

Dear Age you’re correct - this whole plandemic and government overreaction has made many aware of the propaganda being taught in schools - that’s why nobody has any faith in institutions- there will be a msssive spike in home schooling ! Ha bring on the next geenations 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Who said he was leading? School system had problems before pandemic. See distorted safe schools program particularly in Vic. See Mark Latham who talks about 'silly' gender matters taught in schools.

Good to see schools named after movie stars

Mine has increased.

After teaching for over 34 years and having interacted with many school principals, at no time did I encounter such a stupid, ignorant statement from any of them

I would have thought the endless parade of so called ‘experts’ with wildly different views would answer his question as to why in a period of crisis make decisions centrally and with a flat structure.

Self appointed or The Age appointed.........

Who gives a fuck what a principal thinks about anything other than running a school.

Lol.Leading?!?! Ex Murdoch hack, Melbchief, finds principal of third rate scandal ridden private school for an opinion on democracy. Laughable. Looks like Murdoch tactics being applied at Costello’s TheAge & gayalcorn wants her name associated with this now gutter rag. auspol

Why is he a ‘leading’ principal and why should we care what he thinks?

Still happy to take taxpayers money though. Who cares what this person thinks?

No shit, he only just figured out democratic institutions are untrustworthy, has no business being a teacher let alone a 'leading' principal

TimWilsonMP By the way, Canberra doesn’t seem to have been doing much for last 18 months or so. Is that your point?

TimSmithMP % of woke Warriors on Istandwithdan 100% % of female nut cases on gov payroll 99%

Is the Age ever going to run out of angles on which to bash Dan and the govt...probably not, it’s too invested to give up now

Didn't know there was such a title as 'Australia's Leading School Principal'. Who gave him that title? The Age? There are hundreds of great Principals around the nation.

Private school wealth and privilege is at the heart of ongoing corruption and inequality in Australia. defundprivateschools

TimWilsonMP What a bullshit headline to take out of what he said.

Ooopsy, TheAge is finally waking up to the masquerade of Daniel and fearing that the paper as well as the ALP will disappear entirely in 2021. Just as quickly, the woke warriors of the left troll the net. But... they have never had enough cash to buy a copy!

Wot?

yep great school i remember all the scandals from this leading institution..teachers there had a lot to answer

... so a gossip rag now?

TimWilsonMP More trust for aged care all round!🙏🏼

Beat up! Beat up! Beat up! You guys have got no shame. I'm cancelling!

Pakula isn’t doing Hailebury proud

What a load of old cobblers. Please try to read the room - Victorians have had enough of the negativity. People are more likely to have lost faith in the media. ThisisNotJournalism

Leading school principal? According to whom? BS!

What a load of shit.

Leading, private school principal. Sending all our public school love🙈 🙄

Trust in Victoria’s democratic institutions and the government’s pandemic response has been eroded by the MSM, federal and state LNP.

Too many skeletons in the closet at these schools. How about reporting some facts.

How is this even a story? How is this at all newsworthy? There's so much happening in the world and we get a school principal complaining. FFS!

Slow clap - your carousel of people who’s opinions are not based on having a medical background or managing pandemics continues auspol 🤦🏼‍♂️🥱

Total bs.

Correction: 'More trust in [private] schools needed for coming revolution

Nine/Fairfax really is equivalent to the toilet paper produced by News Corp now, isn’t it?

steven_kolber Yeah sure. Don't forget Haileybury tried to sack their Music teachers

Who says he’s leading

Learning or the business model imperative ?

Schools run democratically?

I like Derek. He has a good marketing dept. But leading principal. On what measure?

Finding it hard to justify the fees.

Victoria, baaaaha. Lost sheeple DanAndrews

Who made him the leading school principal? Come visit some schools in the outer suburbs and see how he goes. Oh, and government schools in those areas don't have scandals like Haileybury. IStandWithDan

All this rubbish just as we prepare ourselves for a first little step out of this.... If he thinks that given what the 'world' is dealing with then i would question him in a role such as that... its been tough so bolster your students not this rubbish

steven_kolber 'Mr Scott says the shift to digital learning has aggravated inequity in education...' Doesn't his school pretty much epitomise inequality in Australian education?

Australia's leading muppet

Facebook combined with epidemiologist r us degrees 👍

DrCCunningham never heard of 'im

This constant negativity is bullshit. If you negligent pricks hadnt have been sniping since the start, perhaps more people would have done the right thing in the first place. You were once a great paper.

Click-bait. The new norm for

2. equitable but obviously not the principal wanting return on his schools physical assets? Stick to your knitting, principal.

1. School Principals obviously have a lot of time on their hand! Haileybury runs campuses in China as well! Is the principal speaking for the CCP? Would the principle care to speak about democratic trust deficit in China? Everyone agrees that digitisation make learning more

First.....one award does not make him a 'leading principal'.....Private school bias much.....second, the very nature of a pandemic means quick decision making that doesn't lend itself to extensive debate - how long have you really got Rubbish article....again, just divisive.

How does one become the leading school principal? Is it a democratic process?

I hope their trust in humanity has increased .

Private and religious schools shouldn't exist.

Is 'Australia's leading school Principal' perhaps laying the groundwork for a fun new political career with the LNP?

What makes him “leading”?

What has happened to this paper.

This is a paid ad for the school surely?

Yeah, nah. We put this is the hands of the CHO for a reason. You should be capable of explaining the reason to your students.

tyrelle123 Be would rather see everyone infected and more deaths throughout Australia I suppose!

Pedagogical Punce....

Um.... we all went to school ..... so...

OMG 🤦🏻‍♂️ Just Google “Haileybury College scandals” ...

“Australia’s leading school principal” - LOL, is this the drivel that Ninefax has sunk to publishing?

I don’t mind opening up really, when virus spreading wildly, this ole man better don’t complain, given his age n weight, likely he would....

Incredibly disappointing that you keep posting story after story attacking the COVID response in Victoria. You do know new cases have dropped from 700+ a day to less than 40 in 5 weeks? Victorians are doing so well, but your constant negativity isn't helping.

MSMTreachery

This childish manufactured outlook reduces my trust in overpriced education. If I had any.

How can the headline be “Australia’s leading school principal”? Says who? Gay_Alcorn this is the stuff you have to fix.

More garbage from The Age.

He needs to spend a term at St Albans SC instead of Haileybury.

School that nobody outside of Victoria has ever heard of

Good ol Derek should have read FairFundingNow website and report back what is democratic

TimWilsonMP Another Murdoch spray...

More like he's worried that he's losing all the perks and donations from all the overpaid Lib donors that send their kids to his School!! pfffttt...l wonder how much they paid him to be another entitled Libwhiner

By reducing 700 daily cases to under 40? Have a look at how things are going in US, Europe and the UK.

You left out the part about non-government school winner. He doesn’t represent the majority of schools/principals/teachers.

Who the hell makes up these headlines? Sweet cheebus, Australia’s leading school principal, what a crock!!!

Odd take. What's happened with trust in democratic institutions in NSW, Qld, SA, WA, Tas - & overseas eg the USA (Trump's response), the UK (Johnson's response), Italy (Conte's response), NZ (Ardern's response) and elsewhere - esp places where case numbers are huge & rising again

FFS

There is no democracy in Victoria. Directions are made based on a Capitan’s call, not supported by science as we are told. This road map is effectively someone’s own idea of a way out. Zero science has been handed out in support.

Maybe he should concentrate on restoring trust in private boys' schools before he takes on politicians.
