Earlier in the day, university officials said they thought Mr. Falwell was going to resign. When asked over text by The Wall Street Journal if the university would be releasing a statement about his resignation, a Liberty spokesman replied affirmatively.
Two weeks ago, Mr. Falwell went on an indefinite leave of absence, following criticism about a photo he posted on social media that showed him with his pants unbuttoned, a cup of dark liquid in one hand and his other arm draped around a woman. The woman, who Mr. Falwell said was his wife’s assistant, also had her pants open.
On Sunday night, before the Reuters article was published, Mr. Falwell released a statement through the Washington Examiner, claiming that his wife had an “inappropriate personal relationship” with a young man who later tried to blackmail the couple. He didn’t name Mr. Granda and said he “was not involved” in the relationship.
