Extra staff, more space and clear guidance is needed to reopen schools safely, the National Education Union says

Prof Chris Whitty said"the chances of children dying from Covid-19 are incredibly small" - but missing lessons"damages children in the long run".

"Government advice needs to cover the possible self-isolation of bubbles and, in extremis, moving to rotas or to more limited opening. It needs to cover advice to heads about the protections needed for staff in high-risk categories if infection rates rise."Prof Chris Whitty:"The chances of children dying from Covid are incredibly small"

BBCPolitics Why are they bothering if kids are allowed to cluster round - with staff too - hugging, with no masks when the GCSE & A level results came out?

By far the biggest risk to kids returning to school is cars, not Covid....

And lots of teachers with erect nipples and wet t shirts

A Union made up of teachers should be quite capable of doing its own risk assessments and method statements & concluding that there is little risk. Or don’t they want children in schools?

No making the Unions illegal and closing them down would help schools to open.

Surprise union doesn't agree with their employers its gone on since the unions where formed

Teachers are supposed to be educated intelligent people, why do they need government to explain what they need to do? The rest of us have been doing it since March just apply the same logic. BBC just trying to cause more unrest.

I have’t spoken to a single teacher who supports this continuous stream off rhetoric from Unions who are clearly trying to make political gain. Kids back to school + parents back to work = start of economic recovery. If 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 & 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 can do it so can 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🤫

I see parents & teachers saying it's unsafe to go back to school. Same teachers /parents go out for a meal, go to shops and visit busy beauty hotspots with their kids. We all just need to live with this virus now until we get a vaccine. Education and economy can't suffer anymore

Why don’t the teachers get on with it and write the clear guidance they say they need themselves, instead of whining about it? This country is drowning in ‘guidance’, how much more can we possibly need?

DanJohnsonNews DanJohnsonNews I taught you I care desperately about kids! Mr Tye told me I’d never be SLT because I always put kid first for the 1st time in my life I can’t with hand on heart say I’m doing that. Please don’t make this about unions make it about ppl caring about kids& families!

DanJohnsonNews Let down by no plan A!! Crack on & cross fingers isn’t a plan

Stop putting this stuff out just to worry parents. You’re as bad if not worse than the tabloid press.

Christ, you’ve had four months to help out with a solution for this day. It’s amazing how many teachers have been away over this time. Keep hearing how intelligent these professionals are, yet all that comes out “ nobody has given us the guidance to keep safe” P poor performance

The propaganda about children going back has changed my mind.If it’s necessary to churn out weeks of brain washing to convince us it might be ok I have concluded it’s obvious it isn’t safe & children going back should be voluntary. If so much propaganda is needed it’s not safe.

Did essential workers need a plan B? It’s time teachers decide whether they want to teach or not.

Schools with their so-called learned teachers and their unions have had 5 months to come up with solutions to the challenges. They must be thick as shit or just not prepared to go back to work. Ffs supermarkets have stayed open.

Bloody Unions......get the kids back to school!

There’s a surprise...schools are literally about to reopen. Could have bet anything on a report like this. The NHS have had to get on with things, they had no plan B. Children need to be back in school for their own mental wellbeing. We can’t live like this forever!

Just go into McDonalds or KFC and you will see that schools have nothing to worry about. Parents are more than happy to ignore social distancing.

Everyone else has stepped up, the teachers only looking for problems not solutions. Been sat on their backsides on full pay whilst everyone else mting their bins, delv their parcels, stocking the shelves, driving the buses. Teachers are the dirt under your finger nails!

BBCPolitics how about you guys report on the issue of prince andrew

Like that’s going to happen

BBCPolitics Scotland's schools have been open for weeks!! I'm guessing you're talking about England again as the UK & as usual ignoring the other Nations of the UK. It would be respectful to not post England-only post under BBC UK.

When schools reopen there will be at least 1500 teenagers with coronavirus, if each pupil takes 10 subjects there will be 15,000 teachers who come into contact with a pupil with virus. NEUnion TimesEducation

No, people need to wash their hands regularly and take other good hygiene steps...

There are 66m people in the UK and under 500 in hospital with covid.I don’t think we need a plan b. Key worker kids have been in continually, surely the higher risk children with little impact to any figures. Can we not just open on a normal basis.Mass media is scaremongering.

You don’t need somuch extra space kids have been playing ineach other’s houses over the summer-wth was there a so called spike-no-U.K. remain at 0.05% so stop the hysteria-if there isan older teacher who wishes to mask up so be it but kids don’t need extreme irrational behaviours

I see the unions are already starting with their games again.

I work for NHS, no plan B in March, April May or June, youve had 5 months to make A to Z plans, get on with it

BBCPolitics DONT SEND YOUR CHILDREN IN!! They will forcibly be given a DANGEROUS vaccine without your approval because a law has already been passed to approve this authority!!! Right under our noses!!!

BBCPolitics STOP WEARING MASKS !!! YOU ARE SLOWLY KILLING YOURSELF!! Don’t breath back in wast CO2!!! it’s common sense not the breath in the waste air product a mask is filled with, what’s next? Eating your own stool!! scamdemic lyinggovernment

After months of sitting on their arses with full pay many teachers (not all) and their unions have noticed they might have to do some work. They have had plenty of time to plan this (on full pay). Boo Hoo get back to work like the rest of the country.

Well done NEU .. building at least one if not two generations of people who will blame you for their denial of education for political ends - bet the LabourParty and KeirStarmer are just loving your attempt to filibuster 👍🤬

They would say that no bloody use to anyone blue collar works are keeping the world going while teachers have done nothing but wine

Since when has the UK government given a shit about the children of this country?

What bullsh*t

Apparently, the magic password for all this to happen is 'izzywizzyletsgetbusy'. Seriously, I'm sure the teachers will sort this out.

English schools have been let down, sorted that for you.

Here we go unions flexing muscles. Rest of country has gone back to work and adapted, time schools did the same

Quite what do the head teachers actually do to justify those massive salaries they earn as it seems, unlike the bosses in private businesses, all they do is blame the government rather than try to solve problems

Bollocks just go back to school.

Just do as private schools do!!!

nope just reopen and get the kids back to school

Time for you to save the day 4PlanB !

Shocker.... NOT

Are they implying there is a plan A? ToryShambles

BBCPolitics So why haven't union's put protocols together to protect the members

Get back to School. The rate is so low its more dangerous travelling to school.

No stop this. Teachers are the only body now whining. Get the kids back to school now

Getting sick to death of the teacher union seeking to bring down the government. Every business and organisation has managed to open. They have guidance they need to get on with it

Anything to get out of doing there job.

Why are they waiting until now. This should have been sorted out. Plus a plan in place for vulnerable students and staff.

The same union which approved the exam algorithm 🙄

Not its NOT! - Stop with the Fakenews propaganda!

Ramping income extraction from the globe's one percent isn't gonna happen. So a real contingency is splitting teacher's salaries to fund extra scab labour staff and raising income taxes - also introducing a covid-19 education support tax.

come on all these lazy parents need their children babysitting, no more children at home

robjohnston62 Ahh...that Plan B problem. It never seems to go away...

Transparent accounting demanded for source of funding for 'extra teachers, extra space, spread of learning contact time. Who's to fund these additional lifelong cost?

How many more excuses can the teaching unions come up with? Just get on with it!

Have this :

Think the guidance and the science is very clear. Lets get the children back to school

Before you all start with the anti teacher/union rhetoric. We are all going back to school, and there is no PPE allowed. The govt has had 5 months to put a plan together and it’s going to cost the lives of teachers and kids for them to change tone.

Get the school open, sack the unions that have made the profession look utterly incompetent and totally incapable of planning, processing and working in the best interests of children.

For god’s sake just get back to work.

Scotland's schools went back without any media hysterics, on the safety concerns amid covid19 all proper safety measures were put in place and everybody got on with it, but in England's everything things poured over debated for weeks, maybe something else at play

BBCPolitics Parents just want straight answers but instead we’ve got a minister who look likes he’s just dropped out of Uni and totally out of his depth GavinWilliamsonResign

I think the best thing they can do is follow our brave NHS and retail workers. These people have kept us alive and fed through the pandemic! Get your members back to work in September!!

Also the government should have been funding extra cleaners, wall hand sanitiser stations outside each classroom and the sanitiser to put in it! Pay the extra electricity to have all the windows open through the winter. Schools budgets are so tight anyway they can’t afford these.

Don’t forget the magic wand for magic extra space !

So what have the councils that control the schools done?

BBCPolitics No mention of BuckinghamPalace from our state news then?

Here we go. The BBC mouthpiece for the antigoverment NEU. I thought these were professionals able to apply principles to their specific school. The virus isn't static and rules may evolve. A head teacher said today his school had plans for the whole year. Allowing for change.

Is this the union help ruin children's education

Or. Just open them!

Infections reported in Scotland’s schools already.

Split teacher's salaries to fund more staff - to hire scab labour as educators.

Unions 😁..... Who are they trying to kid...

NCDCgov and Fmohnigeria we can copy this and reopen schools September

And here come the far left union nutters to to complain about people actually having to work for a living !

Just get on with it and stop playing petty politics with the lives of kids. Everyone in U.K. is finding a way to do their work as best they can. T da Chung unions doing everything they can to make kids suffer.

The schools in Scotland have been open for weeks. What 'National' Education Union?! Why is this not a story on BBC England, not BBC UK, our kids in Scotland have been back for weeks. BBC, the UK is not EnglandOnly. BBCPolitics BBCScotlandNews bbcsml

Get back to work you slackers.

Stop being obstructive and teach the kids

Extra staff, more space, clear guidance, a competent government and a visible PM is needed to reopen schools safely, the British public says...

If your that worried about children’s well being why haven’t you broadcasted anythin on these poor kids that are bein trafficked across everywere. Our SaveOurChildren marchs didn’t get a word 😡shame on you 🤮🤮

If only Margaret Thatcher hadn't sold off all those school playing field and if only Tony Blair hadn't banned construction of Asbestos containing Portacabins.

They are clowns. What is it with unions wanting to do as little as possible for as little effort as possible. Workshy capitalists aren’t they

Of course it’s safe. It’s only a cold
