'The balance of risk is very strongly in favour of children actually going to school,' England's chief medical officer said.

England's chief medical officer has warned that failing to return children to school in September would pose a greater risk to them than catching Covid-19.

There's no doubt about the damaging impact of school closure on pupils. So now the question is how many teachers & other school staff are Government prepared to see die when schools reopen. How many Drs & Nurses died suppressing Covid, & what's been the impact on their families?

When the toryparty is a risk to everyone . . Unless you went to eton

He should retire and maybe Boris might reward him with a job.

So you all expect shops to have food crops to be picked and electricity water and gas to flow oh and twitters data centres to operate. These are not run by pixies real people continued to work. No one signed up for this but we must all do our part for the greater good

Dumbest statement ever

Then pay them some money so their not living in s*hit everyday of their live you cruel c*unts

He looks like he went to school next to a temporary nuclear waste dump at Sellafield.

Did it hurt all the kids that have been home schooled for years

Rubbish and who believe s you now

Pretty much everything is a greater risk than Covid-19 if you are under 80 years old!

Kids need that interaction with other kids. Its vital to their social growth

As an adult, I can say categorically that one year here or there isn't going to cause any student significant problems. Heck, it's _normal_ to take a year out.

for someone whose last name is whitty, he's pretty dumb

Does he have kids? Where do his kids go to school?

If the government anounced that everyone inhale eucalyptus vapours for 7 days we control CORONA-VIRUS disease beacause the covid is basically starts from respiratory system and if we control on it from the start of its spread in all over the body we save lives.

I think this govt is sharing same speech writer as current US administration... to save money. This govt might be recycling shredded speeches deemed unfit to publicised. 🤷🏽‍♀️

We all know that children need to go back to school... the do something! As a teacher I’m dreading the 1st of September... I have been lucky to avoid the virus up to now but will I catch it as soon as we are back?

This looks the most healthy way forward, mentally, physically and spiritually

Bullshit. Keep using schools like glorified crèches, so both parents can go to work, to keep the rentier economy afloat, and to pay that overinflated mortgage. So the System keeps running smoothly, regardless of 'few deaths'

If my daughter was still school age there’s no way I would take the risk of sending her back to school. The government is crossing their fingers and hope it doesn’t get bad, and has no real problem in letting others die for it.

klausdodds Really? I wonder what the evidence is? Surely it depends on prior circumstances and duration of absence from school?

Let’s wait and see if Prince George would go back to school in Sep...

We've heard the pros and cons of how to survive Covid 19. Now let's channel our energy and time on finding the solutions like grown and educated adults, shall we? Free internet and access to online classes for middle income & poor families for starters?

Yes, then why not having real small classes (with few kids) and not with 30 kids! Is the reason just money ?

Why is this man not shouting from the roof top about the failure of test/ trace, ffs that’s his job

It’s not if they die from it! 🙄

I believe kids don’t get as sick as adults. I believe kids need to go back to school. I believe this can be accomplished if Chris implements Proper Occupational Health & Safety Protocols for the people who Educate kids. Proper School Ventilation, Social Distancing, Masks, etc ...

To say nothing of rebooting the economy as parents are released from homeschooling to return to work.

BorisJohnson happy to bomb kids around the world and starve them at home but somehow covid19 is a problem for them

Let’s discuss this until September instead of planning involving schools and parents. Wisemen

I don't think lack of education holds you back in this country, look at the cabinet

To children perhaps, but what about the said children’s grandparents...

Rubbish. This man is dangerous.

however small it is 'thought' to be , a bad or no education you live, Covid-19 kills and will continue to kill, including some children, some teachers, and some parents, I trust should this happen Chris Whitty and BorisJohnson will not be in hiding

I'm from across the pond, but I find this surprisingly unscientific and politicized stance foolish, especially from someone in the medical field.

Missing test, trace and tracking targets is lives threatening to all of us. Keep talking about single subjects and avoiding strategic approach to deal with this crisis. From day one you & all those in charge refused to admit that we didn’t have the capacity to control Covid 19

He lost all credibility when he stood by & endorsed Johnson's version of 'being led by the science'.

Confusing ‘school’ with ‘education’ or ‘refuge from an unsafe home’ is ignorance or a lie. A school can be both but must not be assumed to be the only option.

Confusing ‘risk’ with ‘risk of death’ is ignorance or a lie.

Hmm, deadly virus vs hearing about the battle of Hastings 🤔

We should all trust Whitty he always says what he thinks and never just toes the party line.

Is Chris Witty an education provider? Does he know the impacts of education as opposed to dying? What about the children with underlying medical conditions?

1 size fits all approach is too simplistic. Risk to children will vary according to household. For some, the devastating risk of losing a primary carer will be unacceptably high.

New rules CICAgov being drawn up will make this current already poor version 2012 worse for Child Abuse Claims. There will be far less successful to gain Justice of any kind. Help this stop and sign.

Oh Chris Whitty. I can't take what he says at face value. He seems to tell the public what the government wants them to hear. Reassurance and truthful explanation of the risks would help - it's not as if everyone wants to continue in limbo is it?

It shouldn’t be viewed as a binary choice. The impact of closing schools will have disproportionately effected those who are already disadvantaged. Not only in terms of academic achievement but also with regard the wider support schools offer.

Adults are in schools as well. Where's our protection?

He’s right

Can't go to school if you're dead though. Oh also a quick reminder to never trust a tory.

The children of the new generation are 1,000 times smarter, wittier, more innovative and savvy than the generations before them. They’ll survive attending school remotely.

shouldnt he get back to his day job as a space guild navigator in Dune

I wouldn’t trust this man with the care of a stray dog, let alone children

I wonder why we haven't heard from Van Tam on this issue, or at all since his view on Cummings...

It isn't.

what if the children get infected is he willing to accept the responsibility
