“When you take the experience out and go to all-remote learning, effectively what you have is a streaming video service that costs $58,000 a year,” NYU marketing professor Scott Galloway tells smerconish as students demand lower tuition at some schools.

New Brunswick, New Jersey When Rutgers University announced most of its fall classes would be online amid the coronavirus pandemic, rising junior Shreya Patel checked for details on the school's website."Will we get a refund?" she looked up in the Frequently Asked Questions section.

"They said no. That obviously made me mad," Patel told CNN."It just doesn't make sense to be paying such a high amount for something that's not being used to the full advantage."Rutgers student Shreya Patel believes college costs should be reduced.Patel started a petition in July to lower fees at the university in New Jersey, where in-state tuition costs $11,600 and out-of-state students pay $27,560 a year.

Some, like Rutgers, have cut campus fees. Others including Williams College, Johns Hopkins, Princeton, Georgetown, Spelman and Clark Atlanta University have dropped tuition costs, sometimes more for those choosing to study from home. But the majority of schools, from state institutions including Temple University and the University of Massachusetts, to elite universities like Harvard and Stanford, are keeping tuition as is.

smerconish This is flagrantly wrong. Professors have been hard at work learning how to make our online course is engaging and dynamic. We have been taking online courses and reading up on online pedagogy. I would also be happy to talk more about this with you.

smerconish I mean, Smerconish is literally just a streaming video service but he makes multiple times more than any professors and believes he has value. Also, what an absolutely inane and uninformed opinion.

smerconish Hey, NYU, you want to speak to this?

smerconish There’s more informed opinions on the subject of COVID19 and onlinelearning.

smerconish Scott who? This dude has clearly never seen the difference between an online course with a real authentic human instructor listening, caring, mentoring & giving actionable, formative and summarize feedback, and a 4 minute ‘Linkedin Learning video’.

smerconish what about the cost to clean the campus, maintain buildings, security guards, snow removal, etc.? Current students should not be responsible for these costs. If the university wants to continue to pay these people, great, but should come from endowment not this years tuition

smerconish This says a lot more about how this marketing prof teaches, and how little he cares, than anything else,

smerconish I’d like to see NYUniversity cut its tuition by 85% on Prof. Callaway’s advice and then have him tell his colleagues that they should have their salaries cut by 85%. And he can also figure out a way to maintain all those old NYU buildings in NYC with minimal tuition revenue.

smerconish This is one of the most irresponsible “interviews” I’ve seen done on the topic. Shame on you.

smerconish If this guy turned his classes into Netflix that's his problem, but it has nothing to do with how most of us are structuring our courses for remote delivery.

smerconish Phoenix University has been doing it for almost twenty years. The first online university, and making a ton of bucks. But, now, suddenly, online learning is a problem? A problem for universities that are losing millions if $$$ from their canceled sports programs!

smerconish Proof you’re just buying a diploma that each college has set a price for.

smerconish Whoa, what about the mentoring by world-class professors and access to the nest libraries?

smerconish Education should be free. 🇺🇸💪
