SIR – As headmaster of a large, selective, socially and ethnically diverse co-educational day school, I had to present its predicted grades, by department and student, to the governors before the summer recess.

The Ofqual algorithm is dead. But the chaos it has caused is far from overThank goodness the Government has U-turned on grades decided by algorithm, but will school leavers get their rightful places at university? Universities being left to clear up the mess. Most places already filled, now suddenly expected to honour offers based on school predictions. There aren't suddenly thousands more student halls and lecture rooms.
