One of Australia's largest humanitarian agencies is calling for a local Indigenous teacher to be employed in every school to bolster students' understanding of Aboriginal culture and reduce discrimination in schools.
World Vision senior policy advisor Scott Winch said Aboriginal culture and history deserved greater respect in school environments. He said non-Indigenous teachers had a limited capacity to deliver relevant curriculum content, particularly in a local context, and that having local Indigenous community members as core staff would increase teacher confidence.Gamilaraay woman Bronwyn Cochrane, who has been a teacher for more than 20 years, said the World Vision proposal should be the norm.
"Students are more engaged – they feel respected, they feel their history and culture is valued in the educational system, they see themselves represented in texts and they feel pride," she said. "If you are one Aboriginal student in a school of 200, that is isolating," she said. "Aboriginal educators are significant for students who don’t have other staff in the school they can relate to."
The National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation identified in its submission a severe shortage of Indigenous teachers, lack of visible Indigenous role models in school communities and insufficient professional development opportunities for teachers.
ApsaraCollectve And an Autistic teacher!
Why stop there? Let's get teachers for every special group that wants to push their agenda into kids. Oh wait, we already do that with the Safe Sex program!!
Why don't you make it a cop, and they can give advice on how to stay out of custody?
Gosh I can see this proposal getting traction instantly 😉😂😉😂😉😂
It seems to me that doing something like this might have been considered decades ago. As an ex teacher, I think it should be done. I'm not sure it could counter the deeply entrenched racist attitudes towards our indigenous people though.
That and adequately funding public education
Um.... so are we gling to do that for every type of discrimination? Migrants and redheads come to mind
👍👍👍🇦🇺
👏👏👏👏👏
This is a great idea! Fully support!
Yes!! This should have been done decades ago, wonderful idea.
And a transsexual to combat transphobia too
So then should we have a teacher for every race of each child in the class because if only indigenous kids had them, wouldn’t that be prejudice against the others? All we need is teachers that teach all kids respect and the difference between right and wrong.
Did Esme Timbery endorse the use of her idea ?
really? who is going to pay them n traveling allowance? they have made themselves famous by rejecting Oz flag rejecting nat anthem They hate Oz day they want their own assembly body They want to reverse history instead just bygone be bygone Nothing could be done
Absolutely
Any chance they’ll be taught to read and write
The article talks about Bronwyn’s work but doesn’t mention where to find her resources or the name of the TIPIAC program she founded
And get rid of religious extremists.
Yay. If it is genuine and done with First Nation’s people involvement and endorsement. I have watched my primary school age kids learn to have a curious and respectful introduction to indigenous culture going back to preschool thanks to NAIDOC and Reconciliation Australia.
Great idea!!
