Dozens of readers told The Age on Monday they were concerned about a lack of evidence as to whether sending children back to school would exacerbate the spread of coronavirus. Meanwhile, others want a release from the pressure of home schooling

Victorian parents are split on the issue of sending children back to school, even as classrooms open and coronavirus restrictions begin to ease in other states.

“We’ve been lucky. My work’s really flexible and Matt’s at home as well and it is just one kid,” Kelly said. Ringwood mother Lauren Parker said sending kids back to school in the next few weeks would be hugely inconvenient, given initial advice that Victorian schools would be largely closed until the end of this term.

First eradicate the virus. Then open schools. Simply really

Home school or potential death - most parents may struggle with that one. Stick with the science and not the Federal Govts propaganda

What evidence do they want other than medical advice? Are they waiting for some dodgy modelling from climate scientists?

A school is at the centre of a major outbreak in NZ.

Pressure, these are their children they are talking about. There is plenty of help online, from experts on education to celebrities who are entertaining children, so step up and do your duty to protect your children, pressure indeed.

With three infectious diseases experts on Tu 28 Apr saying returning kids to school is safe, michaelobrienmp LiberalVictoria policy is vindicated. australian also reports kids will suffer scholastically if not done, yet DanielAndrewsMP remains the ostrich. springst auspol

I assume all those refusing to take any risks are all non smokers, don’t drink alcohol, are not overweight, exercise religiously, don’t use harmful chemicals at all......

I hope everyone understands there is no zero risk option, only managed risk, unless you want to move to Antarctica. So unless you want to become a bear and hibernate I suggest we steadily move on. My kids will be at school.

I am Victorian and I am not divided. School from home is excellent. It is not forever. People need to lighten up. The teachers are there for the kids, and are doing a great job.

Why are childcare and kindergartners open. Are kinder teachers less important than school teachers

Why is this still a debate? Education is online this Term, and that's that. Give everyone some stability and let's buckle down and make the most of one Term at home. Man, Australian's are showing what a pack of whingers we really are. KeepAustraliaLockedDown

You mean those parents wanting a release from homeschooling really mean they want someone else to parent children THEY chose to have

'A release from the pressure'. Seriously! Why did these people have kids if they so incapable of looking after them at home?

New infection rates are near zero. Even Brett Sutton has said schools are safe. The reason school return hasn’t been announced is Vic testing rates are about HALF that of NSW (yet Andrews doing super job!) That is why there’s a new testing blitz, to give Brett his data to reopen

And the blonde on sunrise snarking away that there's 'no reason for schools not to reopen' Stupid woman. natalie_barr did a much better job. MichaelPell auspol

If kids are at home while 'remote learning' there still has to be a level of monitoring from the parents which is quite time consuming. How much work are parents actually doing if they are working from home? Parents i know have all said its they arent getting their work done

Stop. Using. The. Term. “Home. Schooling”. The parents are not teaching, the teachers are.

There is a Worrying increase with severe conditions in UK children linked to Covid19 needing intensive care unit.

That's bullshit........by far the majority of parents want a return to school. Pulling kids out of school for the SSM protests now the state labor government are using kids again as political tools.

Loved the example cited where we should keep one million kids out of school as to do otherwise would disrupt the child care arrangements of one mother. Quality analysis and journalism.

Keep them home!

The teachers union science is what Dan Andrews listens too

Far out.. teachers are no different to any other essential worker. The essential workers dont have a choice. All you can do is follow all the guidelines like us essential workers have to do

Pressure? My 2 kids are happy working on the laptop half a day

Why don't we send them back to school with a mobile phone and covid-19 app installed?

Social distancing measured were relaxed too early during the Spanish Flu outbreak and this led to a second wave that was worse than the first.

The Federal Government has done and continues to do an exceptional job.The medical advice conservative and considered. Why would you not follow the advice? They are not being political. The PM has dumped any political bias and is doing the best for us all.

Daniel Andrews response.

So does anybody want the kids?

Ironic that it's disadvantaged students who are being most disadvantaged by leftie teacher unions.

Wow, dozens!

Teachers not the heroes in this crisis .

I wonder when kids die, if there will be any blowback on nine media for these dangerous, unprofessional stories backing the government line instead of the science Nine media should think carefully about their choices right now. The lack of basic journalistic practice is dangerous

If the hysterical media told the truth in the first place none of this stupid anxiety would even exist

It’s not home schooling, it’s remote learning. The term home schooling ignores all the hard work by our teachers.

If in any doubt you keeping kids home is a good idea read this report. Blindly listening to the PM is not the answer

As long as it's done right, a staged return to school makes good senseThe economic and learning benefits of a staged re-opening for all students are likely to be significantly greater than the alternatives. 72 kids at one school in NZ tested positive 1 big cluster and you want the kids here to rush back why? Nope. My children are staying home Trumpet the LNP talking points. Bugger the research. auspol ausFRAUD LNPCorruption ScottyfromMarketing

Principals fear student influx when school resumes this weekThe government insists schools are safe, but wants families to continue remote learning until May 11 when students will return to class for one day per week. I’d be frightened too if those two were coming back 😉 A typical high school casual teacher who will interact with over 500 students and staff each week, will not be eligible for even a day's sick pay in the event of becoming infected. Back to School Teachers unions spend a lot of time complaining BUT not 1 teacher has lost their Job or one cent: WB The States are being held over a barrel by the Teachers Union.

Parents ‘left in the centre’ of state and federal schools dispute | Sky News AustraliaSky News host Sharri Markson says the debate around whether students returning to schools has “turned fierce with teachers’ unions, premiers and the commonwealth each holding a different view”.\n\nMs Markson said due to the impasse, parents of school children are “left in the centre of it, uncertain of the right thing to do”.\n\n“Teachers worry that it’s not safe for them to work while parents struggle to hold down a job, and home-school their children”.\n\nOf all the wide-ranging issues to come out of the coronavirus pandemic, education is “on top of the prime minister’s agenda” as he has maintained from the very beginning there is no medical advice to suggest students should not attend school.\n\n“He insists children should return to school as soon as possible, and that the classroom is perfectly safe for teachers if they socially distance,” she said.\n\nHowever, state authorities have resisted the the prime minister’s stance, with the NSW government in particular insisting it will “proceed with its plan to send children back to school just one day a week from May 11”.\n\nImage: AP No one seems to care about our children's futures. All this political BS, sick of it. I bet Slomo wishes he had shut the borders in feb and we would all be business as usual except tourism and universities. Tough on borders what a joke.
