Senate Majority Leader Juan Miguel Zubiri

Zubiri said DepEd should follow the move of foreign governments and schedule an early break for pupils and students to minimize the risk of novel coronavirus disease . “There are only a few days left ’til the summer break, so we should ask DepEd to just order the early break, as what has been done to hundreds of millions of school kids all over the world to avoid contamination and spread,” the Senate leader said in a statement issued Saturday to call for a “more proactive” stance from the government amid the global epidemic.

The early summer break Zubiri said, will “allow our kids to stay safe at home and to allow our schools to be disinfected.”President Duterte has agreed to declare a state of national health emergency following a recommendation by the health department after confirming the first local transmission of COVID-19.

The municipality of Cainta in Rizal and Navotas City have ordered the suspension of classes on Monday over coronavirus fears.
