The Department of Education (DepEd) has started the assessment for immediate repair and reconstruction of damaged classrooms due to Taal Volcano’s recent unrest.

As stated in its latest Education Cluster Report on the Taal Volcanic eruption, DepEd said that, among the recent actions that the agency has taken, was starting the assessment and finalization of the Program of Works to address damaged classrooms.

Classes in one DepEd division in Region IV-A remain suspended – directly affecting 61, 613 learners in 112 schools. Classes at all levels in this division have been suspended since January 13, thus, learners have lost 18 school days. As of February 5, DepEd said that 1,840 classrooms in the 219 schools are being used as temporary shelters of 12,139 families or 43,319 individuals – 10,508 of which are learners.

Other actions taken by DepEd include the downloading of P1.6 million for learners’ kits to School Division Offices of Batangas, additional P200,000 clean-up funds to SDOs of Tanauan City, and P940,000 clean-up funds to SDOs of Batangas.
