Old U-46 school buses get new life with reserve corps, police and fire departments

Chaplain Anthony Catella, Cmdr. Dean Argiris and private Adam Wootton, all members of the U.S. Veteran Reserve Corps Illinois 1st Battalion, stand next to a decommissioned school bus donated to their organization Wednesday by School District U-46. They’re joined by U-46 Director of Transportation Marcy Murphy and transportation shop foreman Eric Shulga.

These days, a battalion is made up of veteran volunteers and civilians who have not served in the military, he said. They currently have 25 members and are actively recruiting more. “Last December, we were deployed to assist in the aftermath of the tornado that hit Clarksville, Tennessee, and we used our own vehicles to get there,” Argiris said.
