Street harassment, for many women, nonbinary people and, well, anyone who isn’t a cis straight man, is often a terrifying part of. Despite the fact that the regularity or intensity of catcalling does not seem to have decreased, we don’t seem to talk about it as much these days—making it just one of the many forms of violence against women that have been normalized out of conversation.
And like all forms of violence, catcalling is about power. What has stuck with me the most about the tragic assault and murder of Ruth George is the reasoning given by the prosecutor. According to , the man who assaulted George thought she was pretty and was allegedly “angry that he was being ignored.”
