Debby Daniels is a firm believer in the power of hard work. After a tumultuous start to life in public housing in Victoria and a slew of jobs, she prides herself on getting off her butt and getting an education.

"That is not the fault of those job seekers, that is a state that hasn't currently got enough jobs or enough hours of employment to meet the needs of all Tasmanians.

Nick Probert — the Tasmanian manager of the Beacon Foundation, a non-profit that helps young people move from education to employment — agreed hard work was essential to success, but it wasn't all you need. Mr Probert said his organisation helps young people from disadvantaged communities connect with employers.

hard work will get you so far, sure. but she's not a judge or a barrister or politician. she's had to slog her guts out to achieve what most from middle class backgrounds would do without really trying. is that really equality.
