While officials say three of the deaths are confirmed suicides, the causes of the others are not known or have not been released.Investigators are trying to determine whether any of the deaths are connected with tainted drugs, according to sources who spoke to the LA Times.In a letter sent to staff and students on Tuesday, USC officials warned against the dangers of drug use, specifically opioids, and the potentially lethal mixture of drugs and alcohol.
"We're doubling down on educating [students] about the harm and serious risks associated with all types of drug abuse and substance abuse," Ms Folt said. "And in particular, we've been also talking about the real risks of mixing opioids and prescription drugs and alcohol because we are concerned about that."
The university said it decided to reach out about the deaths to be as transparent as possible, and to offer emotional support to students on campus.
