At the moment parents and children have to decide where to enroll, potential drives conversations again. In our discussions, parents made clear that they believed they had to suppress their own financial anxieties so that they could allow their children’s potential to take precedence. Most often they wanted their children to attend the right college rather than imposing alternatives that might be less expensive.
Today, we hear from presidential primary candidates about the problem of student debt, its economic costs, and the ways in which it worsens our troubling inequalities. These issues are important in additional profound ways too. A college degree seems today to be the surest way to unlock the promises that the United States has made to the middle class and those aspiring to get there.
