A University of Limerick student remains in a critical condition in hospital after she and another kayaker got into difficulties on a river near Glencar in Co Kerry

The alarm was raised shortly after 2.30pm yesterday afternoon when it is understood the kayaks belonging to the two students upturned in rough river waters near Caragh Lake.

The two were rescued from the water during an operation co-ordinated by the HSE's National Ambulance Service Centre, supported by local gardaí, fire personnel from Killorglin, and members of the Iveragh Coastguard Unit based in Waterville.The young woman was airlifted to University Hospital Kerry in Tralee where she remains in a critical condition.

The other kayaker, a man, was taken to hospital in Tralee by ambulance where his condition is described as stable.
