Comment: Our education leaders need to prepare children for a future of global heating, climate migration, ecosystem erosion and resource depletion, writes Neil Selwyn

Australian schools will address a host of new challenges throughout the 2020s but perhaps the most pressing imperative will be establishing ecological responsibility and sustainability as central elements of how institutions are run.

One immediate challenge is to rethink how schools can be organised and run along sustainable lines. To be fair, environmental issues are already beginning to guide how new school buildings are being designed, made and maintained. However, there are many other aspects of school that lag well behind. In a few decades’ time, the expectation of "one laptop per child" or driving short distances in a fleet of SUVs will appear anachronistic and downright irresponsible. Put bluntly, schools, teachers and parents need to quickly curtail the environmental and ethical impacts of such over-consumption.At the same time, there is a pressing need to revitalise the Australian school curriculum to prepare students for the climate crisis.

There is also a long tradition of curriculum developments and schoolwide initiatives in the areas of environmental education and education for sustainable development. Australia’s education leaders and policymakers need to pay close attention to how these existing interventions might be scaled up as mainstream components of schooling.

Why? 🤷🏻‍♂️

Nonsense.

'climate migration' are the key words here. Open borders for Australia eh? That sounds political not scientific. Marxists know the value of controlling the educational narrative. Probably a globalist to boot!

Kids have parents. Indictrinating our kids is not your job.

Stop lying to & frightening our children UNnecesarily.

Did Neil research his info from Facebook and Twitter?.😳 Neil Selwyn is a professor in the Faculty of Education, Monash University. His research and teaching focuses on the place of digital media in everyday life, and the sociology of technology (non)use in educational settings.

Open society Trojan!

Which one is Neil? BBC Comedy (bbccomedy) Tweeted: When you so woke, you asleep. 😜

The looney media should give it a rest or switch off the lights and close their energy gobbling operations down.

In the syllabus this comes under the heading of 'Foundational bullshit.'

Sorry mate that is brainwashing

Well, we’re finding out who all the idiots are. Neil Selwyn and clowns like him are just cashing in on the hoax and should be charged with child abuse. rabidgreenlunaticleftcircus

Yawn.

Let’s prepare them, in fact, for the end of life on earth , at least as we know it at present.

🤦🏽‍♂️

Yep, we've just about reached peak stupidity!

bencubby It’s the reverse. The children are preparing the leaders for all this.

Neil_Selwyn 14 years ago, when the first phase of peak oil started, I tried to introduce this topic in P&C meetings of a local high school. It was all fine until I proposed to introduce a car free day......

I thought prayers fixed everything?

Or they can teach them to write, read, and do basic arithmetic.

Lol.

Hey Selwyn! 🎶Leave them kids alone!

Yeah like showing school children Al Gores 'Inconvenient Truth' a scaring the 💩 of them, instead of showing them what that 1989 UN Climate Report predicted would happen by now & what has actually happened, plus what Tim Flannery predicted in 2007, it's called educating 🧐.
