Striking Chicago public school teachers reported some headway at the bargaining ...

CHICAGO - Striking Chicago public school teachers reported some headway at the bargaining table on Friday in a contract dispute focused on reducing class sizes and other issues that would benefit students.

On the second day of the strike, the two sides focused negotiations on three of the union’s demands: more preparation time for special education, more special education case managers and teachers and more bilingual education support staff, said Chicago Teachers Union spokeswoman Chris Geovanis. Bargaining was set to resume at 1 p.m. on Saturday and continue on Sunday, union President Jesse Sharkey said. The work stoppage forced officials to cancel classes for more than 300,000 students, but school buildings stayed open for children in need of a place to go during the strike.

“The mayor seems really stubborn,” she added, “so I am not encouraged that this is going to be over soon.” That emphasis has resonated with many Chicago parents but even so, the strike has put some of them in a bind over child care. The strike comes seven years after Chicago teachers walked out for seven days over teacher evaluations and hiring practices. In 2016, teachers staged a one-day walkout to protest the lack of a contract and failure to stabilize the school system’s finances.

smaller class size?that can keep more teacher jobs only.

The wave crested with Chicago economics,we need public choice for schools & to break up bloated worthless unions, if these teachers are so great why are they so apposed to accountability? Tenure is a racket no better or worse than war..

Just want to say I am very tired of paying Congress for doing nothing for the people!, I think their pay should be given for the legislations that are approved. Their actions lately have been a lot of BS. 3 damn years of nothing.
