Student councils of the country’s medical schools reiterated the appeal for the continued implementation of the full tuition subsidy which was “removed” in the 2020 budget following the budget cuts received by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED).

“We, the eight student councils of the eight state medical schools, stand as one in calling for the continuation of this grant for the coming academic year 2019-2020 and beyond,” said the State Medical Schools Alliance , an alliance of all state medical schools in the Philippines.

The SMSA noted that the House of Representatives transmitted the proposed P4.1-trillion national budget to the Senate for 2020 and, as of the latest update, the Cash Grant to Medical Students-State Universities, Colleges was “removed due to the budget cuts” received by the CHED. “As we speak, there are no news or updates regarding the coming years,” SMSA said. This uncertainty, it added, “places students at a disadvantage because some rely on the grant to continue their education.” It also noted that with both academic years’ reliance on a memorandum release for the tuition subsidy, “there is a clear lack of permanence.” Along with the recent budget cuts, the SMSA expressed concern that the “continuity of the grant is highly unlikely.
