The head teacher of teaching and learning at Carlingford High School initially planned to be an arts teacher, even completing a degree in fine arts. When she moved to the UK early in her career, she discovered it was far easier to get a job as a maths teacher than an art one.
"They had an overseas trained teacher program when I was there and as part of that you got a mentor, I had weekly meetings with mine, he kept an eye on me and gave me advice and it really helped having such a powerful mentor when I was in that initial phase of teaching," she said. "It became a focus of mine to help with the mentoring of other teachers, helping them with lessons, giving them feedback," she said.Ms Bennett said it took her about three years to become a highly accomplished and lead teacher from the time she began the process.
