US President Donald Trump is expected to host the family of a US student who died shortly after returning home from North Korea.

Otto Warmbier died after he was detained in the rogue nation for more than 17 months and was released to the US in 2017 in a comatose state where died less than a week later.

The 21-year-old student was on a group tour when he was detained for allegedly trying to steal a propaganda poster in January 2016. A US judge has ordered North Korea to pay more than $700 million in damages to the family of Mr Warmbier following his death. His parents filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the North Korean government, which it did not contest. Image: AP
