But stereotypes haven’t stopped Roa and his group from being one of the first in the world to reach a microchip milestone.RISC-V-based computer instruction set system on a chip“If RISC-V is a brain, then Roa’s group’s achievement was to add senses to that brain for the first time,” said, computer science professor at UC Berkeley and the head of the group that first developed RISC-V in 2010.

Roa described RISC-V as “Linux for hardware.” – like Linux, an open-source community has sprung up around it and it is now the preferred architecture for chips in AI, next generation car electronics and new applications in the Internet of Things space – it is even being used at the US Department of Defense.
