SEREMBAN: The government should not shut down 21 of the 27 teacher's training institutes nationwide as has been reported, as this would affect school-leavers who want to pursue a career in teaching, says Umno supreme council member Datuk Jalaluddin Alias.

He made the statement following a Berita Harian report on Tuesday that claimed the government was mulling shutting down 21 teacher's training institutes from next year.

The Jelebu MP said the previous Barisan Nasional government had set up these institutes to allow trainee teachers to be equipped with the necessary skills. Jalaluddin expressed hope that the government would think things through thoroughly before making a decision.
