A 19 year-old film student from New York has spent at least a week in a Russian jail facing drug charges after she was arrested with medical marijuana while visiting Saint Petersburg with her mother.

Audrey Lorber, from Staten Island, was arrested as she tried to fly out of Pulkovo Airport when Russian border agents allegedly found about 19 grams of marijuana on her, according to a statement posted by St. Petersburg's Moskovsky district court.

She was charged with drug possession and since then had been awaiting court hearings in a detention facility in St. Petersburg. Investigators said Lorber had pleaded guilty to the charges. It was unclear if she had a lawyer. Russia has harsh drug laws, which police enforce aggressively and carry long prison sentences. The offense that Lorber is charged with—Article 228 of Russia’s criminal code – is nicknamed “the people’s charge” because it is so frequently used to jail people.ABC News chronicled another American's 2-year jail odyssey in the Russian system on what he says were trumped-up drug charges.

Lorber now studies at Pace University while also working at a restaurant, according to her Facebook profile.

Sounds like a personal problem! Tuff sh-t. Her being a film student has nothing to do with it! JS

Their laws are not our laws

TheWarMonitor GovernmentRF KremlinRussia_E let's see if we can do the right thing here and let our kid go!

If she still had 19 grams, how much did she start with? Lol I don't buy her story even a little. She straight deserves jail time.

You kind of have to obey the laws of the country your visiting, why is that so hard to understand.

It is to mark a point, now everyone knows that they cannot take marijuana to Russia.

Don’t travel when you are sick and currently on treatment. That is your problem.

NYC college student being held in Russia after medical marijuana arrestAudrey Lorber's congressman on Staten Island said, 'No American citizen should be held in jail for a medical condition.' Either way, she was stupid....imo. “...no American citizen should be held in jail for a medical condition...” - Rep. Max Rose, D-N.Y. So the Dems want people to disregard other countries’ laws in addition to this of the USA. How arrogant can a “leader” possibly be? Was she arrested for stupidity? Who in their right mind would take medical marijuana on a trip to Russia?
