In a given year, one teacher estimated she spends $500 to $1,000 of her own money on school supplies.

USA TODAYROCKVILLE, Md. – Lauren Moskowitz's shopping list was the stuff of every kindergartner's dreams. The special-education teacher would need finger puppets, jumbo crayons and sidewalk chalk for her 5- and 6-year-olds.

Teacher Lauren Moskowitz loads her car with items purchased at a Rockville, Md. Target on Aug. 18, 2019.Moskowitz said her special-needs classroom has more needs than other classrooms, but the county allocates cash only on a per-student basis across the district. Along with baby wipes for students who aren't potty-trained, Moskowitz bought markers, sidewalk chalk and jumbo crayons – good for children in occupational therapy. She paid for it all out of her $90,000 salary, which accounts for her master's degree and 15 years' experience.

Alexandra Daniels is a 6th grade teacher at Eastern Middle School in Montgomery County, Maryland who has used her own money to purchase school supplies.“They walk into my room; it’s got a pleasant vibe. It’s going to have a pleasant smell,” Daniels said. “Middle school is a trying time, and I want them to feel comfortable and happy, and I also want to feel comfortable and happy.”

In a given year, Daniels estimated she spends $500 to $1,000 of her own money on school supplies. Her annual salary: $55,927. Ali Daniels, a math teacher at Eastern Middle School in Silver Spring, Maryland, shows off her back-to-school shopping list for her classroom.Although their spending numbers fall short of the Department of Education survey’s average of about $500, both Daniels and Moskowitz said their shopping was far from done.

McDonald’s makes there employees pay for uniforms. Teaching has it far better

Nobody forces them . Period. They choose how to run there classes. Zero sympathy

cathielbraun Maybe if we weren’t flying around the world to Golf Courses and Building Walls WE DON’T NEED ..... kids would have school supplies !!! I applaud these teachers, but they SHOULD NOT have to do this !!! ✝️❤️🌷

Reimburse them ALL Public School teachers... Betsy DeVOID should be forced to donate the total annually.

She should stop doing that. I'm going to bet that the State Representative from her area doesn't spend their money on anything but themselves.

We in PTA at my kids school would give each teacher $175 not much but something as they do spend so much of their own money and time

aliarau Yes it’s ridiculous. Then someone will probably feel charitable and dump a truckload of supplies on that teacher and her school and the news will make it their”feel good” story of the night, while the states do nothing to provide public education with sustainable funding.

Teachers are not paid well. People WAKE up!!! This is a bigger problem of government underfunding education. If the teacher needs to spend the money so the students have a shot at obtaining the learning, bless her heart! She is taking food off her table to get the job done!!!

But doesn't that go for almost all jobs except state of Fed where they don't give a shit. I spend more than that sometimes and don't even ask to be reimburses

Contact your local Masonic Lodge, they may have a program to give some assistance to a teacher or two.

Privatize all government schools.

Just out of curiosity has anyone figured out how much someone who works in an office spends on dry cleaning pre-year?

Total dedication by great teachers but no usa/jlawrence doing anything to thank or help these educators out Just bitch about the President but not low lives in congress

My Mom did the same thing.

Teachers where I live make more money than I do, so they don't need my financial help.

unfortunate but so what? Not as if they can't afford it....

In a given year millions of Americans spend much more than that supporting their jobs.

Hm. I'll bet every other professional buys the same amount too. Look at these kids. They're monsters.

So? Teachers get paid well for their job, have summers off, receive excellent health care, and far better retirement plans than most Americans. Spending a few bucks on extra school supplies for their projects is not a real problem.

dedication devotion

America has a bloated public education administration problem. It’s nothing more than a democrat jobs program.

A retired teacher gets around $45,000 from their pension. Most Americans have no pension.

Absolute trash. The way we treat teachers in this country is shameful
