Are iPads for every child a welcome addition to the classroom?

at St Thomas Aquinas, a state secondary in Glasgow’s suburbs, the post-summer return to school was leavened with the promise of a gift: an iPad for every child. The tablets cannot download apps, are tracked by the school and come with a firewall to block off-limits parts of the internet, but the pupils can take the devices home. Not all year groups have so far received them, leaving the rest jealous, says Barry Quinn, the deputy head. “They can’t wait for theirs to be deployed.

If so, that would make it different from similar past experiments. Philip Oreopoulos of the University of Toronto, co-author of a forthcoming review of randomised control trials on education technology, notes that results show academic consensus: although handing out laptops increases computer use, it has no impact or even a negative one on attainment. There is not as much rigorous research on tablets, but little reason to think results would differ.

Some programmes that use computers for personalised tuition have, though, produced promising results. With the right software and careful management of how they are used, tablets could help, says Mr Oreopoulos. Yet so far their use in Scotland seems to be less well defined. At St Thomas Aquinas, they have been used for catch-up quizzes at the start of maths lessons and to film gymnastics to check on technique. Teachers have been told to use them in every lesson, but left to decide how.

Another argument for the handout is that it levels the playing field for children who do not have access to the latest technology at home, and does so in a way that does not stigmatise those who most need the help. Critics respond that buying expensive gadgets for all is a poor way to help these pupils, especially when there are cheaper programmes that have shown better results.

Distraction

It depends

Depends on the student. I would monitor and hope they don't watch porn all day.

I'm going to shift there

No

No

alllibertynews Smart tech can never fix dumb children

No!

Access to unbiased information is definitely right. It is the school’s job to do the proper education ...

Only if teachers are trained on how to use them effectively.

Better than United States we can’t even feed our students for free

Apple always has a good August quarter. Back to school. Next quarter, not so much.

Yeah we all know that shit crazy

Maybe? iPads at times though feel a bit distracting, depending on how you use them. The Internet is for more than just porn and video games but sometimes you need to unplug. They might spoil you is all.

They are most certainly a welcome addition to Apples shareholders’ wealth.

It depends on how teacher control using IPADS in the classroom

Why are those 2 Indians portrayed as Scottish students?

Not in the least.

I don't think so.

Free? Presumably someone had to pay for them.....

No.

Frankly, to worry about IPads in classrooms, when there are MILLIONS of children in the🌎unable to assist to school, is absurd.

IPads are a viewing/storing platform for every textbook a student needs - dispensing with the need to lug around heavy books. One of many benefits to students.

They aren't selling either ways

The whole work force is all computer tech so we must as well get them used to the digital work force !!

There was probably the same disapproval when paper exercise books replaced wax tablets & a stylus in schools

..ask Siri! ..she’s listening,..watching,,,learning, profiling each student ( audio words are made into bytes AI can datamine&sell. How many times did u have sex today? Where did u walk? How far? Siri knows...she’d love to ’ help’ in class; Hey Siri,..what’s 3x + 4y - 1?😉 wcgw?

As far as these devices stick to the classroom environment and are used solely for the purpose of education.

Good contemporary question.1 could save trees with eTextbooks, be home sick & be virtually be present to hear class instruction & discussion, but, will Principle/Teachers have secret key, access to webcam, if student is in bedroom? Problematic too, as in Pennsylvania laptops case?

Everyone's moving towards more tech oriented education Nothing wrong with that

Ipads can supplement textbooks and instruction, but they can also be abused. The quality of the educational experience of an Ipad is directly related to the ability and training of the teacher. It can be a tool or a toy.

No

All information you need is on the internet...wise moves

No.

Its relative, if there are ways to control the usage in terms of when and the applications that can be accessed and probably some search engines,

Just no no no no no
