For the first time in 53 years, the ABC show Play School openly discusses the issue of death and what happens when someone's grandpa or pet fish dies.

Play School sought input from the National Centre for Childhood Grief, which helped guide the language used in the episode.

"Because if you use a phrase like 'passed away,' that doesn't mean anything to a child. Or that, you know, 'Grandpa is up in the sky'. Let's get nostalgic and take a look back at the presenters, characters and stories that have kept Play School relevant. Palmer drew on her experience talking to her four-year-old daughter, and having to discuss the death of their own family members.

Thank you to Dr Liz Mann, clinical director, National Centre for Childhood Grief for her invaluable input to this important and well produced episode.

My daughter was 7 when her Dad died. All grandparents still alive, no pet had died. There was a lack of resources for this situation. I did my best helping her...she’s still grieving. Talking about it on shows she was watching is necessary

Saw all the negative tweets here but after reading and watching realized It was done very well and at kids level and with room for parents to help kids deal with death of loved one. Well done ABCaustralia 👍✌️

Well done for prompting a discussion on this issue. It is hard for parents to know how to prepare their children for the death of a loved one.

Well done Play School on tackling this important subject. “The truism about ‘death and taxes’ was expressed as early as the eighteenth century. Christopher Bullock wrote in 1716: ‘Tis impossible to be sure of anything but Death and Taxes’.”

Why does the ABC think it has a role in parenting. Could it be that those who work at the ABC are such bad parents that they judge all of us on their abilities.

Did they use half or full flush for the service? 🤔

Why do they want kids to grow up so fast, what is the hidden agenda

Everything has gone too far and it seems like the handful of lunatics running the media is unstoppable. Not sure how we can stop this insanity.

All these people concerned about an episode on death....how do you explain where meat comes from?

The Adult thinking agenda continues on our ABC ...leave kids alone...

What's next .. a Play School episode on gender diversity for 4yo .. Are millennial parents unable to find a link on Google for the kids to read about death ... how can adults be unable to explain 'death' to their kids ... how will they handle having to explain sex

Yeah I'm sure the 3 year olds will be delighted.

I have great concern for this generation of young children. Media wants to constantly expose them to adult subjects instead of focusing on development activities that enhance their senses & skills.

leftboomer It's really not necessary. Young children will experience death (grandparents, great grands, pets). I did at age 3.

Yes! Death doesn’t need to be such a taboo subject

ya gotta be SHOKidding me

Next week on our abc playschool. Why being transgender is great for the environment I want my taxes back.
