The number of students found to be cheating in exams and assessments at University of NSW has increased by 2000%. The huge jump is due to improved investigative techniques and a focus on detection, rather than deterrence | pallavisinghal_

The number of students found to be cheating in assessments and exams increased by about 2000 per cent at the University of NSW when it moved resources from deterring cheating to detecting it.

"All of us inside and outside the sector have been putting our efforts [into] deterrence … but we've found that assessment design cannot prevent contract cheating; you can't design it out.In a national survey of more than 14,000 students conducted last year, nearly, and Associate Professor Ellis said the actual proportion of students who cheat could be as high as 12 per cent.

"In one case, [just looking at a set of footnotes showed that] the person who wrote the first footnote was not the same person who wrote the second and third footnotes. The first person didn't know how to use the footnote function in Microsoft Word, the numbering was all wrong.

pallavisinghal_ This tweet made me laughed in Shocked! OMG increase in 2000% times cheating in exams on assessments is Truly Insane! Why go Uni when u plan to Cheat! Best just buy a degree !

pallavisinghal_ Shocked, totally shocked.

pallavisinghal_ As degrees become more worthless :-(

pallavisinghal_ It's the Chinese students, unis are too dependant on that CCP Yuan to do anything about it

pallavisinghal_ How many are overseas students who should not even qualify for university but allowed in as universities have become addicted to the overseas cash cow.

pallavisinghal_ Is that what coaching houses teach them these days?

pallavisinghal_ Ouch, that's not too surprising. I hope that some of those aren't false positives though.

pallavisinghal_ Unis know this is happening, mostly among full fee paying Asian students, many of whom have poor spoken English & limited competence in written English. Tutors are told to ignore cheating and pass them because they pay big bucks. It’s a business model

pallavisinghal_ Sirry irriots.

pallavisinghal_ It is not detection OR deterrence, it is detection AND deterrence. Find the cheats and mark-penalise - fail - expel depending on the severity of the offence. Dont let them off like you do presently, or have done over the last 15 years! It devalues the degrees students gain!

pallavisinghal_ Why are they cheating?

pallavisinghal_ Next question: are they failing them?

pallavisinghal_ cheating is why they know little as grads Many could not get jobs so they open cafes or sushi joints

pallavisinghal_ Good. Shame the full fees they pay will ensure a slap on the wrist and a degree to take back home.
