Between 11% and 20% of veterans who served in Operations Iraqi Freedom or Enduring Freedom experience PTSD in a given year, according to the VA. Two veterans speak to hereandnow about their experiences living with PTSD.

Army veteran Isiah James ‘loved’ being in the military. He says he enjoyed the kinship and camaraderie that the U.S. armed forces offered him.“One day I was in the service and the next day — literally the next day — I was just a civilian out of my own,” he says.

“This little voice inside my head just said, ‘You can't give up.’ So that's when I started seeking help and it literally has saved my life.” “I didn't really deal with [PTSD] while I was in [the Army] because you're surrounded by... like everybody is going through the same things. So you don't really want to manifest your problems on anybody else. But it's when you get outside the military, and the civilian world is a lot different, and you're on your own and you don't really have that support network there.”: “I joined in 2008. I had one deployment to Afghanistan. I spent 10 months in Kandahar.

"I realized that I'm not alone in this fight, that people are dealing with this who, for all intents and purposes, look ‘normal’ but are dealing with these issues on the inside. And I was so relieved that I didn't have this albatross around my neck anymore weighing me down because as Fidel was saying, like not sleeping and the sleep paralysis, I know exactly what he's talking about because I still don't sleep to this day.

hereandnow I can understand PTSD I can’t understand claiming to suffer from it for life from what they’ve been exposed to in these Wars It seems we’ve become terrified to ask questions of anyone saying they have PTSD. General public isn’t afraid. They question most of these vets

hereandnow Over HALF of these IRAQ AFGAHN Veterans file V.A. Disablity claims for PTSD What’s never asked or answered HONESTLY is WHY? These wars don’t come close to prior Wars Lowest wounded lowest KIA Only 8% saw what limited combat there’s been So why are so many claiming PTSD?

hereandnow This war was started on a false premise: weapons of mass destruction. All fabricated as a business deal by GW B. Actually he should have been put in prison for it some politicians say. Lets focus on the real truth why these guys have ptsd. NPR again.

hereandnow I heard these men this week. I am glad to see their faces. They are frank, brave and willing to fight on the new battlefield in public view. Thank you, gentlemen. Thank you WBUR.

hereandnow If that's what happens to trained soldiers, try to imagine what it was like for locals to endure the whole thing.
