This fall, U.S. school cafeterias are expecting shipments of free food courtesy of President Donald Trump’s trade disputes.

A teacher lines up the students for school-prepared lunches at Madison Crossing Elementary School in Canton, Miss., Friday, Aug. 9, 2019. Scott Clements, director of child nutrition at the Mississippi education department, said they've ordered two truckloads of trade mitigation pulled pork and four loads of kidney beans for use in their cafeterias. The products are coming from the U.S.

A Maryland district is awaiting a truckload of canned kidney beans — one of several “trade mitigation” items schools were offered. The USDA has long purchased and distributed agricultural products to help farmers, who can face swings in supply and demand in any given year. But the agency is buying even more as a result of Trump’s trade fight, which prompted other countries to take retaliatory actions that curb imports of American farm products.

Already, schools are entitled to annual allotments of USDA foods based on how many students they serve through the national school lunch program. But cafeteria officials who operate on tight budgets say they have always welcomed the “bonus” foods the agency offered in the past, even if the market forces that make the products available isn’t always clear.

Taxpayers are paying for this food, by way of subsidies. Trump isn't giving anyone a gift.

Usually the food the US ships out is far more better than the food the US imports from Mexico.

So free food is a problem?

That’s frightening. 😕

Hope they like moldy soybeans. Soy sauce built right in! Secondary socialism. Primary socialism- farm assistance. And trump says he isn’t a socialist...

GMO/Glyphosate 💩

My husband and his friend would talk about getting cheese and peanut butter from the government when they were growing up in the 1950's.

scubapops Check the expiration dates!!!

Our tax dollars at work! Yay?

'Courtesy' is an interesting word to use. Taxpayers are funding this and school lunches should be free anyway.

Even giving food to schools they can’t help but hate Trump. This is a major sign of their syndrome they have developed. It’s like a religion to them. Be happy for the kids and their families it helps.

OmarAslamLugo Corn? Soybeans? ..yum..

SOCIALISM !!

Define free. Then rewrite this headline and fire the author. Idiocy like this is part of the problem.

Seriously?

houseofbuddy Is it true that some high end Camps use these programs to get free food?

This reminds me of the old Soviet Union. Stores giving out government food. Lines of people waiting. Government corruption and kickbacks. A government trying to pacify it citizens with leftovers. Putin must be laughing his ass off. He’s turning America into Communist Russia.

So taxes go for the food that can’t be sold overseas and I have to pay for my kids to eat it. Double taxation..hmmm

You mean tax payers!!

Not free the taxpayers are paying for it with relief payments to farmers. Just another untrue fact. Can’t glorify the end results of a disastrous tariff plan.?

“Free”?

Free food? That food isnt free, we give farmers welfare every year or they cry. Then we just gave them another bailout while this trade war is going on. We paid for that food and I bet schools will still charge the kids.

You make it sound like it’s a bad thing !

everyone on here saying well the tax payers are paying for. so what we are pay for ppl to be on food stamps and give them what they call free money and free food we need to feed the kids at no charge just like we do ppl who get food stamps

But ALL Americans are suffering the Trump GOP trade war...

HealthScience trump wants to kick 500,000 kids off the school lunch program, maybe they can still get a nutritious meal. Taking money from Peter to pay Paul.

Free to the school, socialism to the taxpayer who is footing the bill.

See, you can’t separate Socialism from Capitalism entirely.

TNSTAAFL

Hey GOP and realDonaldTrump we must defeat socialism so wanted to make you guys aware of this!

That's a lot of soy.

HeadlineRewrite Taxpayers Slammed with Another Bill to Pay For Trump's Chine Trade War

It's not free

It’s not free if already paid for it with government bailouts

Know what would've made this article really pop? How is this bounty going to be passed down to the poorest children, many of whom were turned away from cafeteria counters last year if they couldn't afford to pay; equally as many of whom are too often only able to eat at school?

Did the Times headline writer take a new job?

Um... Not 'free'

Speaking of...with this super great idea of tariffs on Chinese so they buy food products from Russia why dont we take that “extra” food (nobody is buying) and start to feed the homeless, poor, needy? Gov can subsidize still as they are doing now but go extra step and feed peeps.

I think it is very good that the school, in he end of the article, states that they only order what they can store and use of the free foods.

WHAT AN ASS

This is necessary to fight socialism.

This wreaks of socialism

Kansas soybeans and Kentucky bourbon

'GOVERNMENT CHEEEEESE!'

The perfect liberal lunch, meatless.

And for every American reading this - YOUR TAX DOLLARS are being spent on making Trump's trade wars appear successful even though they are a massive failure. THIS instead of decent education and healthcare or infrastructure.

Hooray, soybeans for everyone

MAGAs: This is fine! Also MAGAs: School lunch programs are Socialism!!

Socialist Republic of Trumpistan has a nice ring.

Oxymoron. He's taking away some of the kids who need it lunches.

Food of the highest quality, I’m sure. 😂

OK, so... Trump starts a trade war on tariffs to 'level the playing field.' Then he sends 'free' food to schools. It's not 'free.' We pay for that food with taxes we pay from our paychecks. In other words, we pay the tariffs one way or another. It's a shift. Level playing field?

Yay, buckets of soybeans for all!

Nothing is free.....

Congratulations . This might win 1st prize for most disingenuous headline of the year. May seem like free food to the school, but it comes from a series of misguided, costly, uninformed trade policies costing taxpayers a fortune. DO BETTER. SundayThoughts Tariffs TradeWar

Is AP ONCE AGAIN DOING PROPAGANDA FOR THE WhiteSupremacistInChief ......IT IS NOT FREE IT COSTS US BILLIONS OF $$$ IN SOCIALISM TO THE FARMERS.

Is that Why the Trump Administration ended the Child Lunch Program?

Trumps policies are sound. In this case, leading to benefits for Americans who rely on government funded food. America First. Unfortunately many ppl on this thread have poor reading comprehension.

Sooo, by definition of a Republican its a 'socialist handout', like the farmers were given a 'socialist bailout'. Republicans use the term 'socialist' like it's a bad thing... until they need it. Damn that socialism!

Again...smoke and mirrors from this corrupt administration

I’ve thought about this! If the farmers are receiving $32B in bailouts (socialism) for POTUS game of chicken with China, why can’t the food that has already been paid for be allocated to those in need

Good move

Soybeans?

STOP

'Free' products. Tax payer paid for products, is the correct way to put it.

It’s our fucking money!

Feee red beans and rice... alaskaschools should learn how to cook 👩‍🍳

Are the cafeterias going to adjust the price of the lunch since they are getting this food at no cost to them, or are we going to pay for donated food?

It’s definitely not free.

Mmmm how is socialism going to tatse?

This headline needs to be retracted.

Free to the school socialism to the taxpayer who is footing bill.

Yeah, it's not 'free food'--it's 45's Socialism for Farmers Food': 'The products are coming from the Department of Agriculture, which is giving away the $1.2 billion in foods it’s buying to help farmers hurt by trade negotiations.'

Soy beans every day

Why are they even getting free food! The amount of school taxes we all pay should cover that! WTF are these schools doing with all the tax money they collect as well as the money they collect from the kids that pay! Kids better get this free food for free then!

The USDA is being GUTTED and will make food safety less reliable. Food assistance dollars are being taken away. These schools admittedly are stuck with storing and distributing these dumped foods. THEY ARE NOT 'FREE'. OUR tax dollars pay for the worst deal maker's tantrums.

BestPresidentEver realDonaldTrump KAG

mr_jettlife

Not free, but definitely put to good use. There is long term gain in correcting our trade relationship w China.

This is socialism, glad the magats are catching on

Mmmm. Soy beans for lunch... Everyday

“Want some more soybeans courtesy of the regime and chairman trump, Johnny?” notsocialism

Sounds like socialism

That’s nasty.

Do we trust what’s in the food since it’s free Nothing is ever free

This is just food the Government has to buy because farms can't sell it due to trade wars. So our taxes are paying it. So socialism. Hahahaha

I need proof it will be free. Should be, after providing billions in subsidies to farmers. Allow children a decent meal. Real vegetable instead of ketchup.

Gives new meaning to 'Eat your food. There are starving kids in China.'

Our youth wants their frozen bricks to be manufactured in the USA!

I’ll continue to pack their lunches,

So the use taxpayers money to pay for the food going to schools funded by taxpayers for lunches bought by taxpayers kids. Nothing like paying three times for something. Are we done winning yet?

Nothing is free...somebody is losing money

It IS NOT FREE. American taxpayers are paying $30 BILLION to farmers because of trumps tariffs.

More Tyson's 'chicken' nuggets, pizza, mozzarella sticks, and can fruit. Loads of sugar and dairy should keep them alert and focused.

Thank god my kids don’t eat school food

President Trump manages to get free food for school cafeterias, allowing more funds for education purposes

This is courtesy of the tax payer, but sure.

'We make our own chili soup' wtf chilisoup 🤦‍♀️

Kool....then tha Kids should Eat Free!!!!!

So bring your own lunch 🤷‍♂️

Then they sure as HELL better not deny a child a lunch if tgey dont have money to pay
