Three quarters of a century after hundreds of Japanese prisoners of war escaped from a detention camp in Cowra, New South Wales, the town has forged a friendship with Japan centred on peace and respect.

He and other members of the RSL began mowing the lawn of the graves and gradually improving their condition.

Mr Oliver's son Robert said his father was a passionate advocate for peace after serving in the Middle East during World War II.
