Cabby jailed 8 weeks for causing NUS student's death at Clementi Road junction Singapore

SINGAPORE – A taxi driver whose negligence resulted in the death of a 19-year-old female undergraduate whom he was ferrying to the National University of Singapore was Friday jailed for eight weeks. He had earlier pleaded guilty to two charges - causing death by committing a negligent act not amounting to culpable homicide, and causing grievous injury by a negligent act which endangers life or the personal safety of others.

She sat in the rear left passenger seat. Zon Lim Thou Jun sat in the front passenger seat, while Ting Jun Heng and Lim Jin Jie sat in the middle and right rear passenger seats respectively. He saw a car coming towards him from the opposite direction at a high speed. However, he decided to complete the right turn.

Both cars spun around and were severely damaged. Yap’s cab also hit a stationary car at the junction. The judge disagreed with Yap’s lawyer Josephus Tan, who had sought six weeks’ jail. Tan had argued that he case was unique as Yap had intermittently stopped at the turning pocket to first check for oncoming traffic.
