'An annual survey of high schools in California shows an alarming decrease in football participation for a fourth consecutive year,' writes columnist ericsondheimer .

This year, lacrosse becomes an additional option. It is an official championship sport for the first time in the CIF Southern Section, which encompasses 565 local schools. There were already 119 boys’ lacrosse teams statewide this past spring.Overall, there were 814,004 sports participants at the CIF’s 1,606 schools during the last school year.

Gary Bernardi, who has coached football at eight different colleges in a career spanning more than four decades, lamented the loss in community spirit that has accompanied the fall in football participation at all levels. “When I was 8 years old, I went to see Van Nuys and Monroe [high school] games on Friday nights,” Bernardi said. “You go to games now, how many little Pop Warner kids are attending? I was with the Valley Chargers and there might be 25 kids from different levels at games. You looked forward to it and looked up to the guys and looked forward to playing.”

Bernardi, currently an analyst for the offensive line at San Diego State, said he was also concerned that young people and their families were losing out on an opportunity to receive instruction from coaches who could become lifetime mentors.Bernardi was 12 when he first met Frum in 1967.

ericsondheimer I don't know if I would say an 'alarming decrease'. Probably better to describe as a logical decrease.

ericsondheimer Good news-less CTE

ericsondheimer BREAKING: Increasing Number Of California Parents Against Giving Their Kids Concussions There, I fixed it for you.

ericsondheimer It’s simple kids don’t want to be treated like shit by high school football coaches or end up with a TBI.

ericsondheimer Why is this “alarming”? It sounds like parents are simply making more informed decisions about whether they want their children to play football. And that is a good thing.

ericsondheimer Kids don’t wanna bash their brains anymore?

ericsondheimer “Alarming”? What a bizarre word choice.

ericsondheimer And?

ericsondheimer Maybe because of fears of head trauma damage. Football helmets only protect your brains so much. I’m just sayin

ericsondheimer Not alarmed. This is good news. Other sports are much less dangerous and also cheaper to equip.

Wait they are not playing ⚽ football anymore or crack your brain football 🏈?

ericsondheimer Pato_Villalon , al menos, veremos menos pelotazos en la cabeza xD

ericsondheimer Ok people brain injuries rarely happen. It’s crazy people to think their kids are going to get ALS for playing a game 4 months out of the year. You people are raising some soft ass kids make sure to strap your teenagers into their car seats too and wipe thier asses for them

ericsondheimer 'Alarming'? Seriously?

ericsondheimer Ha good

ericsondheimer Alarming to......

ericsondheimer Football⚽️ is better and safer sport

ericsondheimer “Alarming?” Why alarming? I would say it’s good news for young men’s brains everywhere.

ericsondheimer Has more to do with the cost of football than the danger. Football is one of the greatest team building experience a boy can have.

ericsondheimer It’s a savage game.

ericsondheimer It’s alarming so Twitter followers will get engaged and have to express their opinions Fixed - “shows a decrease in football participation “

ericsondheimer Alarming? More like good...

ericsondheimer they should be playing rugby. a much better sport for high school students, both boys and girls.

ericsondheimer Fewer kids getting brain injuries is the opposite of alarming, but maybe that’s just me.

ericsondheimer BRAIN INJURIES ARE ALARMING.

ericsondheimer Alarming to who, head and spine injury doctors?

ericsondheimer Oh my GOSH what will we do? This is awful😭😭😭

I am not alarmed

ericsondheimer ...Good?

ericsondheimer Sounds like a healthy trend to me🤷‍♀️

ericsondheimer Why is it alarming ?
