Autism charity says there is a crisis in the Dublin area, with many children unable to access a place in primary school for the coming school term

A leading autism charity has said there is a crisis in the Dublin area, with many children unable to access a place in primary school for the coming school term. His parents, Aimee Penco and Mark O'Keefe, say they are concerned about the impact the situation will have on his development.

Alfie Connolly from Coolock was in the same situation last year - after three years of pre-school he had to spend the past year at home. Autism Campaigners say Minister Joe McHugh needs to use new powers available him to compel schools to make places available for children with special needs. Adam Harris said the Department of Education needs to engage with parents and acknowledge the extent of the problem.

Similar situation,my wife&I have worked and fought hard for years to get what our son needs. A constant battle for supports which is not right as Autism services are poor from HSE. My advice shout loud, use your local TD as these kids deserve every chance. Autism AsIAmIreland

The hunt for a secondary school is just as tough

All children should have a place in school in September and children with autism need to have supports in place when they start school. Government should stop making excuses and make it happen.

Children with Autism should be equal to any other . All children are entitled to get the very same treatment . not discriminated. Give them best chance in life . Why treat them differently

And private schools get €90m. We keep voting FF and FG. This is what they give us. They are disgusting.

The most important thing is investment in diagnosis at the earliest possible stage to facilitate development and growth

Can’t believe their isn’t a school anywhere to cater or is it a local one they are looking for
