According to one of the protesting students, Adeola Tijani, the students were protesting an alleged invasion of their hostels by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crime Commission in search of internet fraudsters, known as Yahoo Yahoo boys in the local parlance.
“The arrested students were said to have been whisked away to EFCC office in Ibadan. They came with some other security operatives that came to the hostel to make the arrests.” It took the intervention of police and men of the Department of State Services to disperse the protesting students.
