The party is also calling for legislative measures to ensure schools make uniforms affordable by the use of generic uniforms.
The proposals are contained in a new policy document 'Tackling Back to school Costs', published by two Sinn Féin TDs - education spokesperson Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire and social protection spokesperson John Brady. The document also pledges to restore capitation grants to schools to pre-austerity levels over a number of budgets in order to reduce the dependence on voluntary contributions.
"We would tackle the increasing use of voluntary contributions by properly funding schools, it is absurd that schools have to ask for voluntary contributions and fund raise for items as basic and fundamental as heat and light," Mr Ó Laoghaire said.Mr Ó Laoghaire said parents were currently paying an average of €949 to get their children ready for primary school and €1,399 to send them to secondary school.

Populism that is paid for by the hard pressed taxpayers. SF looking to get back the votes they lost.
Oh yes the money that grows on trees. SF are very good at spending tax payers money.
Twould be more credible if Sinn Fein was interested in reducing costs in Ireland. But they're not. And as for the people complaining that this would be a tax on childless people, get a grip.
Tax on childless people.
