While there might be challenges in the implementation of its enhanced Alternative Learning System (ALS) program, the Department of Education (DepEd) expressed optimism that the program would continue to attract enrollees.

DepEd Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs Service and ALS Program and Task Force G.H. Ambat, in a recent interview, explained that the DepEd has formally rolled out the enhanced ALS or the ALS 2.0 starting this year. “This will ensure that the ALS program is aligned with the K to 12 Program,” she explained.

Recognizing the possible challenges in the implementation of the enhanced ALS curriculum, Ambat said that orientation for all key officials of DepEd was undertaken recently.Ultimately, DepEd’s goal for ALS is to help ensure that it will be accessible and beneficial for everyone. For instance, DepEd cited the achievement of a 65-year-old woman who completed her elementary education through the ALS Program.

“Dala ng kahirapan, kasi po nagtatrabaho lang po ang tatay namin sa lumber at 35 pesos lang po ang suweldo niya,” Morales said. “Isa lang po sa amin ang nakatapos ng high school at apat kaming babae na hindi nakatapos kahit elementary lang,” he said. For Morales, completing elementary education was like a dream come true. “Ako’y nangarap na sana dumating ang pagkakataon na matugunan ang aking panalanangin na sana’y mayroong eskwelahan na libreng magturo at mapagpa-aral sa kapares ko,” she said.
