Parents ask for tax break as some pay up to $50,000 annually for two children to attend boarding school.

It costs Ms Forshaw and her husband $50,000 a year in boarding fees alone to send their two children to school in Perth."It's not necessarily that we have that money sitting in the bank account, we find ways to juggle, to manage.""Just with that help with the cost and all that stress of financial stress compounds especially when you are worried about your kids' education.

Their nearest secondary school teaches only to year 10 so the couple has sent two of their children to senior school in Perth.Federal and state government allowances covered about $10,000 annually per child for the younger children, and the couple paid an additional $14,000 to cover the boarding fees.

Fair enough to after all your the ones who put food on our tables so theres no need for hunters and collectors : ) seriously Wouldnt want to be some of those schools tv tonight teachers at their breaking point due to students doing as they pls no disapilin respect like our days

Gov spends lots of money providing schools and teachers for education not cost effective for rural children Our local children go away after yr 6 to school There are some minimal assistance it cost us 20000 per child we pay tax on that money at 30 to 35 percent cost is then 26000

They are going a bit commie, aren’t they?

A big fat no! And start discussing who owns the water coming down the rivers or not. Homeschool and let them work on the farm because a lot of those grazier kids look like they need exercise.

I need a tax break because 2 of my children returned home to live because of rental/ housing costs in Canberra. My husband lost his job because of a workplace injury and I am studying full-time because qualifications have significant importance in the capital.

I am shocked and disappointed that this is not already the case. Surely the cost of living component is already deductible

I thought the Age of Entitlement (except perhaps for politicians) was over?

If farmers are destroying our civilisation by refusing to support action on climate change, is there any point sending anyone to school if there's no real future?

🤦🏼‍♂️

Only those in genuine hardship. 9NewsAUS

150% deduction

Save like the rest of us do

PetraAu Let them go through Centrelink like everyone else

Or they can sell some of their multi-million dollar properties to fund it themselves for a year.

Why done drought ridden farms use tech like the tomato growers of Eyre peninsula

I’m sorry but what about every other family that lives in the country & doesn’t send their kids to boarding school? Why are the ‘farming’ kids so privileged?

No

What about school of the air!

Fantastic idea.

I have just finished a home-schooling maths lesson with my son and have very little sympathy

Wait, farming families are always putting down city folk by telling us how woulderful their country lifestyle is for their kids. So now we should give them tax breaks for choosing to live remotely?

Or we will stop feeding Australia 🤬

If you can't afford to send your kids to a private boarding school, send them to a public school or home school them

Fair enough, distances to local school can be huge. We should support families that produce our food.

they still have to pay boarding fees if they are attending government schools. That is called voluntary school fees. Boarding fees are what private boarding schools charge.

As Tony Abbott once said of Indigenous people living in remote areas, “It’s a lifestyle choice”. So suck it up.

Instead of a Low Value Pool D6, what about a Child Cost Pool for each child? Every time a parent invests in offspring - footy fees, swimming, uniforms, dance, music, school fees, dental fees, school booklists, - it accumulates -with deduction for taxpayer.. incentive to invest

WHAT!! $50,000 for two children!! Get over yourselves home tutor if necessary, that is ridiculous. Where are they sending them

I wonder what the comparative cost already sits at between farmers and those on Newstart? Big farms are geared to run at a paper loss while the family trust grows in stature

Isolated children’s fund. Farming properties are in families for quite often over 100 years. It’s not a choice it’s a tradition & the only thing people know. At least I won’t be eating polluted products from overseas. Milk will be a start.

Just been thrown out of my new apartment, cracks in the building. Need a tax break to pay for repairs and builders' faulty cladding...

Oh dear, don’t they know what happens in boarding schools ? Isn’t it one of the birthing places of wealthy pedophiles ? TV show said there is approx 40 peds in British parliament. I read that it’s cos the rich go to B schools etc etc . Just a question My opinion question only

Agree with this. There are often no high schools for 100s of kms. I went to Boardingschool and loved it. We all deserve a decent education.

Private schools can give them scholarships

Socialising costs for lifestyle choices again.

It make sense they’d ask. Many schools in rural areas don’t go up to yr 12. There’s extra costs involved to send your kids to school. Where I lived, kids had an 80km round trip to the next town to go to high school. Many kids on outlying farms and stations can’t even do that

What's that? Something is expensive because of where you choose to live and work, and you think you deserve a tax break? Join the queue - everyone could say that about something - housing, transport, cost of living etc.

There is publicly funded distance education available to rural families - if they want to take a boarding school option then they need to be responsible for that expense.

Independent status is one way to receive Youth Allowance. I live in regional Aust and my kids received it based on my income.

Pathetic attitude. I’m a farmer worrying about the welfare of my animals.

For you 3 below that have your heads in your ass, go and spend a week in the life of a farmer and you’ll see they’re the lifeblood of keeping Australia going. We should be helping these people, because if we don’t have farms to manufacture food, we’re stuffed.

What a joke. We hand taxpayers money to elite private school most of us can't afford then give tax breaks to a select part of the population to access them. Maybe the farmers should get better jobs or work harder?

Farming kids are often eligible for Austudy, unlike town or city kids whose parents can't write their income off on the farm!

Millionaire farmers shouldn't not be given a tax payer subsidy to send their kids to elite private schools... how about we focus on removing poverty in Australia.

In the real world if you live & work in a desert it doesn’t rain 😳

farmers dont pay tax during d drought how on earth could they claim tax deduction for boarding schools?
